Well, that’s about as close as it gets…. but after checking the photograph, Trench Admiral was the slightest bit faster than Welcome Change and got the nod in the 2015 Aristides BC (GIII).  The final time for the 6f was 1:09.23.

The field of seven got away from the gate with The Octopus jumping out quickly.  Trench Admiral, Supervolt from the rail, Moon Landing and Arctic Breeze giving chase.  Welcome Change just in behind that group, and 80/1 Alternation was the early trailer.

Down the backside and a half mile to run, The Octopus was now joined by Arctic Breeze, Trench Admiral between that pair.  Supervolt a length off of that one, another length and a half to Welcome Charge.  Gap of a length back to Moon Landing, with Alternation at the rear, six lengths covering them.

Around the far turn, to the top of the lane and two furlongs to run, Arctic Breeze moved quickly to take a two length lead.  Trench Admiral four wide, The Octopus headed backwards from the rail and Supervolt up to join that group.  Anther length and a half back to Welcome Change, Moon Landing from the inside and Alternation continued to trail, now eight lengths from front to back.

Past the furlong marker, Arctic Breeze by three-quarters of a length, Trench Admiral down the center of the track and closing in, Supervolt still right there with Welcome Change on his flank.

Inside the final 150-yards and to the wire, Arctic Breeze on the lead, but Trench Admiral with a late push to stick a neck in front, then, just as the meet the wire, Welcome Change with a huge late push and the two of them hitting the wire in a blur.  The PHOTO sign went up.  After viewing the instant video replay, Trench Admiral was in front by the narrowest of margins, with Welcome Change a hair back in second.  Arctic Breeze was a half length back in third, Supervolt was a neck back in fourth.  Moon Landing was in fifth, Alternation in sixth and The Octopus tired to close out the field.

Trench Admiral is a 3yo gelded son of Star Admiral – Red Trench Princess, by Soviet Trench, and he was bred by his owner, Gimley, in NY.  This was his fourth lifetime win from ten starts, and he now shows $148.080 in earnings.  This was his third win from his last four starts and his first graded score – it looks like he’s a horse with a future!
