The Frizette – Grade I
1 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $400.000 Two-Year-Old Fillies. At AQU
The Frizette: another that’s been here since the beginning of HRP history, starting with Jerry Garcia Racing who is HRP history himself winning the first edition with Road to Nowhere which went on to run second in the BC Juvenile Fillies and retire to breed five races later. Ahh… those were the days. My old chat partner Whitewater Stables won the following year with Waimea Bay. Some interesting tidbits in the repeat trainer winner’s columns: Alydar Stables won the race way back in 2006, then again in 2022 and is entered today with Tiffy T looking for win three. Mb Stables has won three times and is looking for number four with Boldly Unbold, and Riggins Racing has won twice and brings two today in hopes of number three. As for this race, it looks to me like a battle between Wicked Angelina and Ukraine Be Free with Ukraine Be Free having a slight upper hand as the only horse in the race with a familiarity of a mile race. Here’s the field:
Horse Owner Odds SRF
Wicked Angelina The Sidley Stud 5-2 97
Ukraine Be Free La Canada Racehorses *2-1 94
Rock Steady Rampage Stable 3-1 91
Miss Comanche Riggins Racing 5-1 91
Santorini Riggins Racing 4-1 95
Lose Control Team 7 Illusions 6-1 90
Tiffy T Alydar Stables 8-1 89
Woman On The Moon Arindel 6-1 90
Boldly Unbold Mb Stables 8-1 90
Successful Song D J C Racing Stables 10-1 90
Tonic Wine Williams9 15-1 89
Ideal Impression La Gloria Stable 20 1 88
Santorini has reeled off three straight sprint wins, most recently the $100.000 PID Debutante Stakes. Not bad for a $1.000 horse. Wish we had a mile work to look at to get an idea how she feels about the route, but that last seven-furlong work was sure an eye-opener.
2 Lose Control Team 7 Illusions 90
That last second place finish in the $150.000 Seeking the Ante for Lose Control was decent enough, and yet disappointing since she was the favourite and got beat. No works to look at to see how she feels about the added ground, so we have to guess.
3 Boldly Unbold Mb Stables 90
Boldly Unbold broke her maiden in her third try in a six-furlong maiden race at SAR, then jumped into the grade one Spinaway at SAR finishing sixth a length off, not terrible, but a flat run. A good 1:37 3/5H work after that says she’s ready for a mile, so Mb Stables sends her to us prepared.
4 Tonic Wine Williams9 89
Tonic Wine has been sprinting and losing and has no works to show us to help us understand.
5 Woman On The Moon Arindel 90
The grade one Spinaway was Woman On The Moon’s first stakes race, so fourth beaten only a length seems not that bad, but it’s hard to tell where she goes from here. Does she tighten up and improve. Was she telling us the added furlong was getting to her? I reckon this is the race that will answer some questions, but that doesn’t help at the betting booth today.
6 Tiffy T Alydar Stables 89
Tiffy T tried a mile on the turf after failing on the dirt in the difficult $1,000.000 KD Juvenile Fillies and managed fourth a couple of lengths back. Seems a tough assignment to come back to a mile on dirt at this caliber.
7 Rock Steady Rampage Stable 91
Rock Steady, in great form, looked impressive winning in hand the $200.000 ELP Debutante at seven-furlongs in August. She’s had a nice mile work since then and looks fresh for this figuring to appreciate the added furlong.
8 Ideal Impression La Gloria Stable 88
Ideal Impression was a big auction buy, $375.000 from Allinthegate unraced, and did what she was supposed to do by winning easily at first asking at CD, but then couldn’t make the deep close work as favourite in the $225.000 Debutante at CD, and the failed tragically in the grade one Spinaway, leaving us to wonder.
9 Wicked Angelina The Sidley Stud 97
Wicked Angelina came from well off the pace with perfect timing to score a one-length victory in the grade one DMR Debutante at seven-furlongs. Now, the way she’s been developing, three out of four wins, the only loss a mistimed 6 1/2 furlong third in the grade three Adirondack at SAR, nice works, she looks like the one to beat with the added furlong
10 Miss Comanche Riggins Racing 91
Undefeated Miss Comanche at short sprints has been resting since August 30th, and offered up and sparkling 1:37 4/5H dirt mile work on September 27th to let us know she’s very interested in this race.
11 Ukraine Be Free La Canada Racehorses 94
Ukraine Be Free is the only horse in this race to have raced at a mile, and she’s done it twice and with some success. After breaking her maiden at five -furlongs, she stepped right up to one mile in the $100.000 Sorority Stakes at MTH and won by an easy two-lengths. She followed that with a closing three-quarter length second in the grade three Pocahontas at CD also at a mile, so with this experience, she’s likely to be favourite and likely to be the winner.
12 Successful Song D J C Racing Stables 90 Successful Song jumped along with all the others from maiden win into the grade one Spinaway, only her performance was not up there in the one-length log jam with the others, plus no works to look at to help us along.
