Weight Tells the Tale in The Go For Wand Handicap

The Go For Wand Handicap – Grade III
1 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $250.000 Filly & Mare 3 Year Olds And Up.

1st Steel Calling Mb Stables Velazquez J R

I hate to say conclusive because at HRP there isnt much that is that predictable but here we have a classic case of the weight effecting results. This was the only four year old in the field and at weight for age would not have won. Today with bottom weight against three’s she wins. The difference was around 6 Lbs and that is about the difference between just about 70% of the horse population at HRP. The last time she managed a win was in a TP allowance but she had run well enough in stakes races to suggest the flip in weights was all she needed today. Settling at the back she swooped though for a half length win.

2nd Night School Maxmillion Farm Carmouche K

Even the turf king can’t beat the weight difference at HRP but this filly did really well after running a loose stalk to end up just a half length behind the winner. She is the best filly in the field but with the weights against her as a four year old she is going to face similar problems next year.

3rd Thalassa Maxmillion Farm Albarado R J

Got into the stalk and looked like she may win after halfway but her stamina gave out and she ended up third. A good effort but it may be back to sprinting for her.

4th Dame Magnifique D J C Racing Stables Bejarano R

The wide gate speed push meant she went to the lead and weakened, enough said.
