Our list is comprised of the top 12 contenders for this seasons Kentucky Derby. As we see it… This year’s edition will the 18th running of the HRP Derby
1) Howl Of The Hound is trained by Mb Stables. He is an undefeated (5 for 5) 3 year old gelding by Marry Me Mandy out of the Laffin policeman mare Stop Traffic.
His most recent victory was dead heat win in the G2 Risen Star. He also previously won the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity and the G3 Hopeful Stake.

2) Evergreen is trained by MB Stables. This dead heat winner of the Risen Star is a 3 year old colt by Centerpiece out of the Cherokee Sunset mare Calm And Collected.
Along with dead heating with his stable mate HOTH in the G2 Risen Star, he also previously captured the Grade 3 Sham Stakes. Evergreen showed his fondness for the lawn winning the Grade1
Summer Stakes last fall.

3) Cheesy is trained by Keikowin Racing. This gelded son of Exhultant just won the G2 San Felipe. He is by the Inspector Jacques mare Amazing Andrea. He also previously won the G3 Lewis Stakes.
As well he is one of the more seasoned horses of the crop, competing in 6 straight graded stakes races winning his last two. It appears as if Keik has him all figured out now.

4) Proud Crown is trained by Mb Stables. This chestnut just captured the G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes. He also captured the G3 Lecomte Stakes at the Fair Grounds in January. This is a well bred gelded son by Crowned Gold out of the proud Chai mare Step Gold.

5) TKO is trained by Fractious. TKO just won the G2 Tampa Bay Derby easily by 2 full lengths. He also won the G2 Best Pal last summer at Del Mar. Showing his quality early.
He is a gelded son of Residue out of the Moment of Madness mare Hunt. He has also danced every dance, competing in 7 straight graded stakes races.

6) Locomotive is trained by Aer Stables. Fourth in the most recent Tampa Bay Derby. However Won the G3 Holly Bull Stakes in January. Runner up by the slimmest of margins to our top rated HOTH in the Los Alamitos Futurity. He is a Colt by Manhunt out the Chief Charley mare Yosemite.
This horse has always shown his class, winning the G1 Hopeful Stakes at the Spa last summer.

7) Plan To Wheel is trained by Fractious. Won the G3 Gotham this past weekend.
Previously 5th in the G2 Holly Bull. A better than looked effort. He appears headed in the right direction. He also won the Gold Stakes prior. PTW is a 3 year old gelding by Strategic Command out of the Sweep The Nebulae mare Sweep The Wheel.

8) Viral Breakdown is trained by Aer Stables. This a bay filly……yes filly, is by the “tragically” deactivated sire Tragic by the Greek God race mare Conkerberry. She is the winner of the Smarty Jones in January. As well she runner up in the G3 Gotham and a very close 4th in the G2 Risen Star.
She is a fit with the very best and will continue to make noise going forward.

9) Clubhouse is trained by Crocker Ggs. Winner of the G3 Davis Stakes in Feb. He also ran a very good 3rd in the G2 Tampa Bay Derby. This up and comer was acquired via claim for $15.000 in August.
He is a 3 year old gelding by Rumble out of the Cherokee Sunset mare Bullboat Baby.

10) Pocantico is trained by Smokey Stover. Last years 2 year old male champion for the year. This homebred gelding by Decima is out of the Quench mare Happy Clapper. Not only did he win the Breeders Cup Juvenile, but also won won the G1 Del Mar Futurity. His most recent starts were a close 3rd in the Gotham and a close 4th in Davis.

11) Angelino is trained by Nakamura Stables. Just missed a head in the G2 Risen Star. He missed a head bob to our top two rated horses here. Don’t overlook this one. Previously won the Cal Cup Derby at Santa Anita in January. This Gray is a gelded son of City Of Speed by the Rene mare Dead Zone.

12) Afterburner is trained by Arindel. Winner of the G2 Remsen in December. He also won the G3 Iroquois as a juvenile. Was also a runner up in the G1 Pharoah Stakes. Had one start as a 3 yer old and probably needed that one. Acquired after that start by Arindel for the large purchase price of $500.000.
Bay gelding by Pinnacle West out of the Mr. Creepy mare Creepy Nightmare.
