West Virginia Stakes Weekend at MNR

A total of seven stakes events took place at Mountaineer on Saturday, and while two of them got exclusive coverage from the SRF, the other five events were just as important to the competitors that showed up to do battle. It was also a nice advantage to have some of the top riders show up for the day, giving these entries some added bonus in the gate. Here is a brief rundown of the top three finishers for the other non purse Stakes events:

  • The Byrd Memorial Stakes
  • Open Three Years old and up
  • Six Furlongs- Main Track

Track: Fast
Time: :222  :451  :57  1:084

$2 Mutuel Prices:

1 – Macarthur High  7.50

$1 Exacta: 11 – 9 Paid 88.50
$1 Trifecta: 11 – 9 – 1 Paid 492.10

This would be one of three races Dogwood Farms would capture on the day. Rebelling was switched to just Bute for his regiment since joining this barn two starts ago, and now has back to back victories. Trainer has been here since 2004, and this is stakes win number eleven. Second would go to Supremebeast’s Bo York who is looking like he was in full control of this event till a closer took that dream away. Trainer is still in his first season and he did add his name to the Chocolate Town Sprint trophy in late May. Rounding out the top three was Macarthur High also from Dogwood Farms. A recent claim in mid July, this was his first test off the shelf and he has finished 15 out of 22 in the money, so given time this trainer should get him refocused.

Trainer Titan Thoroughbreds set out on a mission after the purchase of sophomore filly Princess Of Sylmar, win a stakes event. They did just that today as she closed from eighth place after the half mile, to win by a neck in a photo. This trainer took top honors on the day winning five races, five second place finishers, and four show placings. Amazing job! Getting nipped at the wire would be Dogwood Farms Autumn Gale who has been a recent add. Has been showing her talents this season with a record of 5 ( 2-3-0 ) and should progress well in the future. The Sidley Stud’s Flying Khaki would complete the top three finishers, getting back to second time Lasix after a one race absence, and also back on the turf.

  • The WV House Of Delegates Speakers Cup
  • Open Three Years old and Up

5 – Last Kommando  9.40

$1 Exacta: 10 – 8 Paid 117.60
$1 Trifecta: 10 – 8 – 5 Paid 639.30

This was the boys chance at tackling this distance and footing and the winner would only finish three fifths of a second faster then his female counterparts. The victory was snatched up by The Sidley Stud’s London Techno in a fairly tight first to fourth place grouping. To say today was a closer’s day would be an understatement, as this sophomore would go from dead last some eleven lengths out at the half mile, to win by a quarter of a length. All three victories have been on the grass and its been a big uphill climb since he finished third in last seasons BC Juvenile Turf race. Dogwood Farms would once again show up placing second here with Pal O Mine, another of many this stable has purchased from Barcelona Farms. Already has a stakes win to his credit, so will be interesting to see his next placement. Final top three finisher would be Titan Thoroughbreds Last Kommando who grabbed the lead at the three quarter mark of this event, and was just out run in the latter steps to the wire.

  • The WV Legislature Chairmans Cup
  • Open Three Years old and Up
  • Four and a half Furlongs – Main Track

Track: Fast
Time: :22  :45  :51

$2 Mutuel Prices:

9 – Hannibal Of Nebraska13.705.004.40
1 – Sabre Rattle 3.102.60
8 – Steel Eagle  6.50

$1 Exacta: 9 – 1 Paid 10.00
$1 Trifecta: 9 – 1 – 8 Paid 244.80

This event would be Dogwood Farms 12th career stakes victory, and he would do it with the help of Hannibal Of Nebraska. This bay four year old has now won four in a row with his last three starts all being stakes wins. He was also the winner of the House Of Delegates last season. Runner-up would be Emerald Racing Inc. Sabre Rattle, who was made the post time favorite coming off back to back allowance company victories. He is out of a known turf champion, so its interesting he doesn’t see more action over that footing. Finally Threshold’s Steel Eagle would round out the top three. Stu and jockey Saez had him there with a sixteenth of a mile to run, but couldn’t make it stick.

  • The WV Secretary Of State

  • Six Furlongs – Main Track

Track: Fast
Time: :222  :451  :571  1:091

$2 Mutuel Prices:

3 – Brilliant Brew10.805.503.50
8 – Britannia 8.305.90
4 – Condulle  4.80

$1 Exacta: 3 – 8 Paid 54.40
$1 Trifecta: 3 – 8 – 4 Paid 988.50

This would be the final Stakes event with no purse money attached. The winner was Brilliant Brew from Titan Thoroughbreds. The trainer would not only grab the win, but would also capture second with Britannia. For Brilliant Brew, this was her third straight victory, and the first for this trainer. Looks like a talented sophomore that should produce a few more titles. Britannia is also a recent claimer and she looked like she was going to steal this on the front end. She has competed against some higher level competition and just needs to settle in here to feel more comfortable. Again, Dogwood Farms would find a placing in this race with Condulle. Her third place finish here would come after being the 1-5 favorite in her first for this trainer. Pace was just a tad faster then she has seen in the past, so should bounce back in her next go around.

Multiple winners on the day were Spinetingling, Nakamura Stables, and Small Town Stables all with two wins, Due Process Stables. Big E Farms and Dogwood Farms with three, and the standout would be Titan Thoroughbreds with five.
