Wet Weather Doesn’t Stop Hot Day of Racing At CNL

8/31/21

   1    CNL     Kittens Joy Stakes

$100.000      2yo     1 1/16m    Turf             118lbs +penalties

I’m one-for-one here in New Kent as High Time sat chilly in the opening part of Tuesday’s Kittens Joy Stakes, on a soggy evening at CNL, but the gray colt pulled away down the lane to win by daylight, stopping the teletimer at 1:451 for the mile and a sixteenth.  The course was listed as soft, and this one is now a three time winner, from four starts.  Search Engine was my second choice and he took the place, coming from far back.  Whirl Win gave an even effort to take the third spot, with Panic in fourth.

Owner – Oquinn Farm   Breeder – Oquinn Farm

High Times settled off of the pace, moved forward on the far turn, took over into the lane, opened a clear lead, won without pressure.  Search Engine trailed to the lane, closed full of run, no threat to the winner, second best.  Whirl Win raced evenly throughout.  Panic rated, roused, one pace.  No Way To Know raced evenly while no threat.  Los Angeles Dodgers pressed the speed duel, tired.  Ginger Tech early speed, stopped.

   2    CNL     The Rosies Stakes

$100.000      2yo     5 1/2f    Turf             118lbs

The hits keep coming and I keep picking winners…  Hot Dog took a three way photo for the win in The Rosies Stakes, getting the five and a half furlongs in 1:061, a head better than Blend in second.  It was another neck back to Diplomatic Party in third with long-shot Exact Wiggle taking the minor money.

Hot Dog – Proud Chair – Yonna Donna, by Stars And Bars, Ch. g  2, Cal
Owner – South Shore Stables  Breeder – South Shore Stables

Hot Dog pressed the pace to the top of the lane, edged clear, battled the entire stretch, prevailed.  Blend patiently handled to the far turn, asked, responded, battled from the furlong pole to the wire, missed in a game effort. Diplomatic Party on or pressed the pace throughout, out-kicked late.  Extract Wiggle evenly, no excuse.  The Skipper Too good speed to the far turn, tired.  Balance Of Bitcoin flashed speed, stopped.

   3    CNL     The VA Oaks

$150.000      3yoF     1 1/8m    Turf            122lbs +penalties

I made it two races and then the handicapping wheels came off of the bus…  Saddle Up showed good speed throughout The VA Oaks, opened a clear lead into the lane, then held off the late charge of Niner Nation to take the win.  She travelled the mile and an eighth in 1:51 flat on the soft turf.  Niner Nation showed good speed throughout and tried to close a late gap, only to settle for the place, paying a huge dividend there.

$2 Mutuel Prices:

3 – Saddle Up 10.10 5.60
2 – Niner Nation   247.50

Track: Soft                 Time: :482  1:132  1:38   1:51

Saddle Up – Lord High Admiral – Saddle Happy, by Growl, Gr. f  3, KY
Owner – Our Athletes  Breeder – Our Athletes

Saddle Up set/pressed the pace throughout, opened an advantage into the lane, held sway, won driving.  Niner Nation taken back off of the early pace, moved forward through the turn, good late effort, settled.  Out Of The Park never a threat.  Point Of Honor broke alertly, on the pace to the far turn, folded

4    CNL     The VA Derby (GIII)

$250.000      3yo    1 1/8m    Turf             122lbs

An Mb Stables entry sent off as the 16/1 outsider…  he made everyone pay.  Call Me King looked more like I Am The King, showing good speed throughout The VA Derby (GIII), being headed into the lane, then battling back to take the victory by three-quarter’s of a length, getting the mile and an eighth in 1:504 on the soggy CNL turf.  Supercomplication gave the winner all he wanted and then some, but could not hold off that late charge and took the place by two lengths over French Style in third.  Andes, my top choice, ranged up at the top of the lane, then flattened out to be fourth.

Call Me King is a 3yo gelded son of Call Me Slow – Spanish Goddess, by Greek God, and he was bred by Sir Daniel Martin in Cal.  Purchased at the Mar 2021 Auction for $100.010, he now has five wins from seventeen starts, and lifetime earnings of $438.400.  This was his third win of the season, and his first graded win.  Congrats to the Connections!

Call Me King broke alertly, set the pace to the top of the lane, headed, fought back determinedly, won driving.  Supercomplication sat just behind the pace, up to take a lead into the lane, battled throughout the stretch, just missed.  French Style rated, responded when asked, best of rest.  Andes raced mid-pack, moved forward into the lane, no excuse.  Last City trailed, passed tiring rivals.  Tempura just behind the pace, tired.  General Principal early speed, tired.
