2 WO ONT Derby (GIII) (BONUS COVERAGE)

Ask and you shall receive… North of the border we go and it’s time to look at the field for the ONT Derby (GIII) and it’s a field with a lot of questions, but today, we get some answers. I took Sports Page as the top selection in this one. He was third in the BEL (GI) and that’s enough in itself to push him to the top pick for me. Electric looked good winning the ELP Derby and will try to repeat that performance here today… if he does, he could be the one. You can make a case for a bunch of these so grab a cold-snack and let’s get down to the rail for what she be a very good race.

The barn purchased this one for $200.000 three races back and it’s been a mixed bag… he was third in the Shipman Hcp vs NY-bred types but beat one in the Peter Pan (GIII) and tired to finish last in the Travers (GI). Now, that’s two really big races and this is softer than that, but he’s going to need his best to be part of the festivities.

They executed the hostile takeover for just $14.000 and he’s been a nice claim as he was third in the Audubon at CD then won the Real Good Deal Stakes at DMR in his most recent. That win was vs. Cal-bred company so this is a step up, but he’s been consistent and should be looked at.

He was one of my favorites on the TC Trail and was third in the BEL (GI) but it’s been tough sledding since then. Sixth in the Haskel (GI) eighth in the Travers (GI) and fifth in the PA Derby (GI)… this isn’t GI company, so the field may be a bit to his liking and he could be the one to get past when they turn for home.

Another that was tagged for a mere $14.000 and came right back to win a stakes at ALB, closing well to get the job done that day. He has four wins and has only been off of the board in one lifetime start, so he certainly knows how to be in the picture… can he do it again here?

Four wins and six seconds from his sixteen lifetime starts, so he’s another that certainly knows where the finish line is. Took down OpAlw types at PRX two back then ran a flat race at MNR. Can he bounce back in this one?

Won the ELP Derby two back then ran a dull one as the 7/2 favorite in the PA Derby (GI). He’s proven to be a smart claim at the $30.000 price tag, and this could be a spot for him to add to his earnings.

Stepping up to GI company wasn’t the answer as he was last just about the entire way in the JC Gold Cup (GI) at SAR back last month. Sharp works getting ready for this one and I’d give him a chance to take the win today… he’s better than that last race.
