With Late Push, Stinky Rene Pulls Out Win in The Pegasus F & M Turf

The Pegasus F & M Turf (Grade 3)- $500.000 Purse
GP- For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Upward
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Turf
January 27, 2024

Some of the best active horses in the game were on display as the running of the Pegasus F & M Turf took place on Saturday. In total, there were four former winners of the BC F & M Turf in the race, so you knew this had to be a good one. Stinky Rene is not one of them, but she was a horse that seemed to be peaking heading into the BC. Before that race, she had won three top races which made her one of the top betting choices for the BC. She just missed out on a check there, but in the Pegasus F & M Turf, she was sure she would not be missing anything, taking the winner’s share of the purse with a come from behind effort in the stretch. Stinky Rene is trained by TwinTowersRacing, which is his third win on record for the stake in general, but first under the Pegasus name. A Beschizza is a first-time winner. Congratulations to them! The time of victory was 1:39.89, which is among the better winning times for the race. Let’s take a look at it:

(1/4 Mile- :23.27)- The early race leader is Omnibus, as High Voltage’s filly runs along the rail and holds a narrow lead on Tabitha Stephens, trained by Mb Stables, who had broken well from the outside. Another Mb Stables entry, that being Wander, is running close by between the two of them in the third position. We have a group of four behind them in a stalking position, and there’s some powerful names with this group. Smokey Stover’s La Terrifiant is on the rail, with Painville running right beside her for Mo Mentum Farm, and on the far outside, it’s The Sidley Stud’s Maggie Greene. Power Royale, who may not have the name recognition yet, is also with this group while running for D J C Racing Stables. Nearby to them is another big name, that being Perfect Class, for Sccj Stables. After a length and a half, the race’s eventual winner, TwinTowersRacing’s Stinky Rene runs along the rail, with Threshold’s Zalinda and Smokey Stover’s Ethereum Star to her outside. Not surprisingly, November Storm trails for Mb Stables, as this is her running style.

(½ Mile- :46.71)- Around the opening turn, Tabitha Stephens had briefly taken the lead, but as they move down the backstretch, it is again Omnibus leading that one by a head while Wander keeps up running right between them. We have the same four wide group running right behind them, and it’s Painville narrowly ahead of the others, which also include La Terrifiant, Maggie Greene, and Power Royale. Perfect Class drops a full length behind them and both Stinky Rene and Ethereum Star to get a little closer to that one. Zalinda’s lost ground to them, and November Storm is still content to trail.

(Top of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Tabitha Stephens starts to look a little quicker than Omnibus at the end of the backstretch and uses the turn to not only take the lead, but to pull away by a length. Omnibus is struggling now and has fallen to third as Wander also gets by her. That one looks to be well positioned for the stretch, as does Painville who looks poised to make a charge while in the fourth lane. La Terrifiant is trying to stay with them but is losing ground. Pulling up to her inside is Stinky Rene, who made a gradual advance in the turn. Power Royale can’t quite keep up with these, and now sees Perfect Class preparing to pass her. Maggie Greene is struggling, and now finds herself about to be passed by Ethereum Star near the rear of the field. November Storm has made a pass of Zalinda, but has not done much else.

(Finish- 1:39.89)- There was a lot of room available to the inside at the top of the stretch, and A Beschizza was sure to seize this opportunity as soon as it was possible. He still had to make up around four lengths on Tabitha Stephens, who remained the leader, but would have a clear lane to do so. With a furlong to go, we saw that version of Stinky Rene that made her one of the top choices heading into the BC as she gradually made progress on Tabitha Stephens. That one was not going to let it be easy, and it would result in a very tight photo at the wire. It was a very late push that got it done for Stinky Rene, just in time! Tabitha Stephens hangs on for second over Painville, and it’s a length back to fourth place La Terrifiant, who narrowly gets that cut of the purse over Perfect Class and Wander. The rest of the order will read Ethereum Star, Power Royale, Omnibus, November Storm, Zalinda, and Maggie Greene.

About The Winner- Stinky Rene, trained by TwinTowersRacing and ridden to victory by A Beschizza, is a five-year-old mare by Rene and is out of Skunked. She was bred in Florida as a yearling by TwinTowersRacing, the only trainer for which she has ever known. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her seventh in 27 starts and her fifth stake win, all of which are graded. Her career earnings are now $1,981.970.
