I’m not a fan of the gals running with the boys and it didn’t turn out well for them in this one… on the other hand, Scafati has found a new lease on life, sprinting on the weeds.  Settling back off of the early pace, the black gelding, owned by Fractious, exploded down the lane and took the BC Turf Sprint (GI) by a neck in :56.83, at more that 11/1 odds.  Rising King tried to close the gap late but settled for the runner-up spot, a head in front of Kid Commander.  Cold Weather Rider came from far back to snatch the minor money in a race that saw pace-setter Cartomancist tire in the lane.

Off and running in the 2021 BC Turf Sprint (GI) and as expected, there is no lack of speed in this one as we had four going at it on the front end… Cartomancist with Bajan Mask towards the inside, Indie Bread and Sister Dearest from the extreme outside, then Elijah G, Tormented on his outside, Kid Commander on his inside, Scafati out wider yet, then a gap to Shelbags, Peppermint Crush and Supersede towards the outside of that one, then a gap back to the trailing trio of Rising King, My Girl Makita and Cold Weather Rider.

Making their way down the backside and nearing the far turn with three-eighth’s of a mile to run, Cartomancist with a one length lead, Bajan Mask right there skimming the rail, a gap back to the sextet of Sister Dearest, Elijah G, Indie Bread, Scafati widest of all, Tormented and down to the rail for Kid Commander.  Another gap to the trio of Shelbags skimming the hedge, Supersede three wide and Peppermint Crush in the middle of that group, another gap to Rising King, then Cold Weather RIder and My Girl Makita could see them all.

Around the turn and they hit the top of the lane with a bit more than a furlong to run, Cartomancist had had enough… Bajan Mask cut the corner and took over by a half length, Elijah G trying to come after that one as Scafati swung widest of all for the drive.  Cartomancist headed in the wrong directions, Kid Commander on the inside of that one and  Tormented with a clear path.  Shelbags down the inside, in behind that group,  Sister Dearest and Indie Bread moving together, back towards the inside for Supersede, Peppermint Crush and My Girl Makita, Cold Weather Rider trying to close from the extreme outside and Rising King was now the back marker.

Deep stretch and to the finish, this was all about Scafati as the black gelding took command and held off the late charge from Rising King to take the victory.  Kid Commander was another head back in third, with Cold Weather Rider closing a late gap to take the minor money.  Shelbags also made a late move to be fifth, Elijah G sixth, My Girl Makita seventh, Bajan Mask and Tormented in a dead heat for eighth, Supersede tenth, Peppermint Crush eleventh, Cartomancist tiring to be twelfth, Indie Bread thirteenth, and Sister Dearest closed this one out.

Scafati is a 4yo gelded son of Engine Failure – In Your Mind, by Commanding, and he was bred by Smokey Stover in La.  Obtained by Fractious via private purchase for $500.000 back in Feb of 2020 with aspirations of the TC Trail, and kudos to the conditioner for finding this geldings best footing, it paid off in dividends.  He now has eight wins from twenty-two starts, five of those wins coming this season, and he has lifetime earnings of $1,789.600.  Congrats to all of the connections!
