This appeared to be the most wide open race of the BC races this year, in my opinion… the fact that the top four finishers were all double digit odds just proved that to be about as true as I thought it could be.  When the dust settled, Arindel’s Broken Tap, sixth in the ’20 rendition of this race, used his late running ability to get home by a half-length in a final time of 1:342 for the flat mile and scoring the win in the BC Dirt Mile (GI) here at DMR.  Just Wanna Blaze was in contention throughout this one, but had to settle for the second spot, a quarter length in front of pace-setter, Dutty john Crow.  Crack Dab was another quarter length back in fourth.  Post time favorite Eclipse My Knowledge was fifth.

The gate sprung open and we were off and running in the 2021 BC Dirt Mile (GI) and like he was shot out of a cannon, Dutty John Crow went right for the lead with a foursome giving chase that included Ricki Tikki Tavi, Eclipse My Knowledge, Just Wanna Blaze and Crack Dab from the outside.  In behind that group was Tko from the rail, Proud Crown from the outside and Broken Tap between them. then a gap to Need 4 Speed, and the trailers, Champion In Action, Penalty Shot from the far outside, Evergreen, Smokin Luka and Get Set Gone.

The field made their way around the clubhouse turn and were nearing the backside with five and a half furlongs to run, Dutty John Crow was out by himself, leading the way,  four lengths back to Eclipse My Knowledge from the rail, Just Wanna Blaze three wide and Ricki Tikki Tavi between that pair, Crack Dab just behind that group four wide, then down to the rail for Tko, Broken Tap on his flank, a gap of two back to Need 4 Speed skimming the paint, Champion In Action three wide with Proud Crown between that duo, Smokin Luka just in behind that one, then Get Set Gone saving ground, Evergreen between horses and Penalty Shot was the trailer.

Down the back stretch and nearing the far turn, three and a half furlongs to travel and Dutty John Crow still showing the way by two and a half length, Tko trying to inch up to apply pressure on the pace-setter, just in behind that one was a larger group that included Just Wanna Blaze, Ricki Tikki Tavi, Eclipse My Knowledge still saving ground, Crack Dab four wide, back to the inside for Need 4 Speed, Broken Tap next to that one and Champion In Action widest of all.  Another gap to Get Set Gone on the rail, Smokin Luka next to that one, Penalty Shot outside, down to the rail for Proud Crown and Evergreen could see them all.

Around the far turn and into the home stretch, Dutty John Crow cut the corner and was still leading the way, nearly three lengths in front.  Seven horses giving chase with Just Wanna Blaze drifting six wide for the drive, Tko towards the inside, Ricki Tikki Tavi next to that one, Crack Dab widest of that group, Need 4 Speed trying to split horses, Eclipse My Knowledge trying to slip up the rail and Broken Tap with a clear shot down the center of that group.  Then a gap to Proud Crown towards the inside, Champion In Action down the center of the track, Get Set Gone on the rail, Evergreen, Penalty Shot fanned wide and Smokin Luka.

Deep stretch and to the finish, Dutty John Crow saw his advantage vanish in the blink of an eye as Just Wanna Blaze and Broken Tap emerged from the group and were flying together down the center of the track.  Crack Dab with a late push from the outside, a four-some of horse-flesh moving together towards the inside that included Ricki Tikki Tavi, Tko, Eclipse My Knowledge and Need 4 Speed, and as the moved inside the final 150-yards, the pace was just too much as Dutty John Crow watched Broken Tap and Just Wanna Blaze push on past… and as they hit the wire it was Broken Tap by

a half length best… taking the win.  Just Wanna Blaze continued on very gamely, securing the second spot with Dutty John Crow third.  Crack Dab ran a bang-up race to be fourth, then a three horse photo behind that with Eclipse My Knowledge gaining the fifth spot, Ricki Tikki Tavi sixth, Tko seventh.  Need 4 Speed was eighth, Proud Crown ninth, Penalty Shot tenth, Champion In Action eleventh, Evergreen twelfth, Get Set Gone thirteenth and Smokin Luka closed this one out.

Broken Tap is a 6yo bay gelded son of Snow Tap – Lady Of Vein, by Quench, and he was bred in Fla by Our Athletes.  Acquired by Arindel via private purchase for $20.000 back in June of 2019, he now has fourteen wins from forty starts, four of those wins coming this season, and lifetime earnings of $2,279.150.  Congrats to all of the connections!
