On Sunday at SAR, we will have the 23rd running of the Grade 3 Prioress, which is a six furlong race on the main track for three year old fillies. It offers a purse of $225.00, which is an increase of $50.00 from last year, but still falls short of the $300.00, which is the historic high for the race. We started with a field of eleven, but that has been cut to ten with an early scratch already taking place. Last year, Noblepark got the win with his filly, Houseofidentity, who came from out of no where to win in a photo. She continues to race well, winning four more races since that point. Here’s a look at those wanting to be the next name added to the winners list!

1- Midnight Glitch (Mb Stables, ridden by B Curtis)- On the rail, this filly will be making her stake debut here in the Prioress, something which is earned after winning three out of her last four races. Her most recent victory came here about six weeks ago, and now she steps up. Midnight Glitch is still lightly raced, having made only seven starts, but you have to always keep an eye on these Mb Stables horses that may be starting to have their breakthrough to bigger and better. Let’s see what she’s got.

2- Acapulco Gray (Maxmillion Farm, ridden by S X Bridgmohan)- This one should be one of the top choices for this race, as she repeatedly performs at a high level. That’s been good enough for second in each of her last four races, but all are graded races, including the Eight Belles at CD in May, and the Grade 1 Test right here last time out. Acapulco Gray was within half a length each time, and it’s easy to say that she is due to finish one spot better, and she is our pick to do exactly that.

3- Lily Potter (Delta Farms, ridden by R Santana Jr)- Once she broke her maiden, she became nearly unbeatable, rolling off a stretch of five wins in seven races. Most of those are in overnights, but she did step up two back in the $100.00 Ruling Angel at WO for a win in May. Off of that, she was sent to the Grade 3 Victory Ride, and was third, one spot behind Acapulco Gray. She’s fresh, having not raced since that point, and continues to work well, giving her no reason not to run a big one here.

4- Dismantle (Mb Stables, ridden by L Saez)- Picked up by Mb Stables in the December auction last year for $25.00 as a maiden and has proven to be an excellent purchase. She’s made five starts since that point, and has picked up three wins, highlighted by the $150.00 Fleet Treat Stakes, for CA-breds. She’s made one graded appearance, as the trainer wanted to see what she could do running long in the SA Oaks. Safe to say, that proved she should be sprinting, at least for now. Look for her to be on or at least near the lead early.

5- Dark Karloff (TwinTowersRacing, ridden by T Gaffalione)- An unproven filly to the point, winning just once over six starts and the other finishes not generating much excitement. When we last saw her, she was fourth in a statebred optional claimer at DMR, and that’s about all there is to report on. Works are fine and consistent, but also don’t jump out at you. She’ll certainly light up the board with a win.

6- Wants It All (Mo Mentum Farm, ridden by J R Velazquez)- The winner of the BC Juvenile Fillies started off her three year old campaign in a positive manner, ultimately winning the Grade 1 Ashland in April to earn her spot in the KYO. Unfortunately, that race went poorly, as she could beat only one of her rivals, and a month later she was again a dismal thirteenth in the running order, this time in the BEL. Yes, the BEL, a move I still don’t understand. Turned it around with a win in the IND Oaks, then cut back the distance to run here in the Test, where she was one spot shy of cashing a check. One more strong result here, and we can say, “she’s back”.

7- Killer Conquistador (Greyfriars Stable, ridden by J Alvarado)- After winning the $225.00 Fern Creek last November, this filly would be sold to Greyfriars Stable for $175.00. She’s still looking to live up to that purchase price as the one-time BC Juvenile Fillies runner has earned just $13.80 in her five starts as a three year old. She was particularly sluggish right after the sale, but that has not stopped the trainer from pouring in more nomination fees to ungraded and graded stakes. Perhaps, last time out, she showed she was about to bounce back by running fourth in the Grade 3 Victory Ride. Or maybe she will go back to her old ways.

8- Island Fever (D J C Racing Stables, ridden by P Lopez)- Claimed by the trainer for $40.00 last fall, and has made six starts since then, hitting the board every time. Until her prior race, all of those were in overnights running for varying purse levels. For her last race, she was given her biggest test to date by being entered into the $150.00 Fleet Treat Stakes, for CA-breds, and she was certainly not out place, running third out of five, and being within a length of the winning Dismantle. Now, a bigger challenge awaits and she should be up for it.

9- Game The System (Arindel, ridden by J Lezcano)- Arindel would claim this filly in mid-January for $25.00, and then started her three weeks later in the $125.00 Valdale Stakes at TP, and she got the win. And then… Well, and then nothing. Game The System has been on the shelf since then, not able to add to her career record of four wins in seven races and showing plenty of promise. The trainer did not race much in the interim, overall, but still was starting horses, so the six month layoff for Game The System is a little puzzling. Well, she’s back, and is a big X-factor for this field.

10- Mexican Pride- Scratched

11- Shedaresthedevil (D J C Racing Stables, ridden by R M Hernandez)- One of three horses in the field that ran in the Test here last month, but Shedaresthedevil got an “F” for her performance in it, not beating any of those she was up against. She had a strong spring down at the Big A, including a win in the $200.00 Fourstar, for NY-breds, and was then a respectable fourth in the Grade 3 Miss PS at LRL. After that, she has not been looking strong. Her works are great, so maybe she’s just a streaky horse. If she can live up to those works, she could win this, but after the Test, I can’t pick her.
