The Sunday feature at the Western KY track known as the Pea Patch is the $200.000 ELP Derby.  One of five stakes on the card, this one is the newest on the calendar as this will be just the 3rd edition.  The first two were run at a flat mile, but this year’s renewal will be the first at 9-furlongs.  Gdp Inc and Our Athletes trained the winners of the first two runnings, but both winners were piloted by B. Hernandez Jr.  Here’s the field of six for the $200.000 ELP Derby:

#1 Southern Speed (Riggins Racing/G. Saez 122): Rail horse broke his maiden vs state bred MSW company at DMR last out and conditioner throws him in here to see just how good he is.  Has been greatly improved since the geld and that’s a nice mile work at LA in early July.  Despite facing a tougher group here, expect him to prove he belongs.

#2 Great Command (Mb Stables/A. Beschizza 122): This will be his eighth attempt at finding the winner’s circle after seven unsuccessful maiden tries.  Gelded immediately after the $15.000 claim in January, but still could only manage a place and fourth in two starts since.  Conditioner demands respect at all times, but really tough to confidently tout this one.

#3 Cuban Moon (Nakamura Stables/J. Talamo 122): Broke his maiden to open his sophomore campaign, but has gone winless in four tries since.  Was competitive in three ALW attempts, but ran poorly last out in the G3 Affirmed.  If you toss out his last, you can make a case that he can find a way in here.

#4 Electric (Angelos Stable/J.K. Court 122): Was tagged for $30.000 two back in a winning 6f effort at SAR before turning-in a fine 2nd place try in debut for the new connections.  This will be his third race 30 days, but, if he shows continued improvement, he’s another who is in here with a chance to get his picture taken.

#5 Accountant (D J C Racing Stables/F. Geroux 124): Looked like a “good thing” when winning the Springboard Mile in juvenile finale.  After six unsusccessful graded tries, drops back to a level that he has shown he can handle.  Obviously the classiest horse in the field, but has to show that he still possesses that competitive spirit to get the job done here.

#6 Campaign Manager (Nakamura Stables/Mar. Garcia 122): Barn’s second entrant appears to be the lesser of the two.  Nothing wrong with his form as he has defeated winners before and that is saying something in this field.  Feeling that he will be a part of the pace scenario, but question if he will find the nine furlongs to his liking in this one.

Final Analysis: Drew numbers from a hat and they came out 3-5-1; however, would not be surprised to see Accountant destroy this group nor if any of the six were victorious.  Good luck to all of the participants in the $200.000 ELP Derby from the Pea Patch!
