Age Proves Dominant in Plum Pretty, But It Wasn’t Youth That Prevailed

I must admit i am a bit confused as to why this one started at 404/1 !! Maybe it was because i felt it was the main danger to the favorite, maybe it was just the usual silliness of the odds maker doing its thing. Whatever the reason the odds were crazy this six year old won like an odds on favorite getting a comfortable trip on the rail and expected and exploding clear down the stretch. The draw and the weight situation meant that she only had the three year old to beat but in the end, though the race pace was well within the three year olds ability, it seems she is lacking the class ability and this mare won in a canter. This was a decent reward for the mare who has been really consistent over her career and whilst she may not ever end up at the sharp end of her age group she continues to race with her heart and that’s all you can ask.

It seems the fairly modest pace here suited the two sprinters in the race as they saved their energy and made their pace tell down the stretch. She was no match for the winner but lets not forget this filly was claimed from a $7.50 maiden claimer at the end of last season so this was an improved effort.

This filly won an optional claimer at LAD in the same time this race was won in so it is a bit of a mystery as to why she was so weak at the end of this. With a record of six wins from eight before this it was clear she had ability but with two poor efforts in stakes races now i wonder whether she has the coded class gene. Whatever went wrong today she was clearly a disappointment.

Got up on the modest pace but in the end we all know how important weight is at HRP and she couldn’t quicken carrying the huge burden of two extra pounds. She may end up sprinting better in the long run and i wonder whether that is where her future lay.
