1st Always Condottieri        Maletto       Jaramillo E

I must admit i didn’t give this one much of a chance against the three that followed her home but the betting algorithm had certainly done its home work and when i saw it had made her the 6/5 favorite to beat the second and third in the BC Fillies and Mares i knew i was in trouble. At the off however things didn’t look good for the favorite as she spun her legs and came out nearly last. For once thank goodness it seemed that the AI caught on quickly and she had soon tagged nicely onto the back of the mid pack horses and hugged the rail which is the key position. It also helped that none of the other fancied runners started well either of course but with a sensible pace nothing was out of touch early on and it was all to play for. She must have been blocked for a run three times at least but that played nicely into her hands as the leader weakened. Sadly the whole event looked like a straight two furlong race as they hit the stretch with everything crossing the line with a length or two this one had got the timing right and held on for the win. It is unclear why she failed last time out, was it the trip or the running style she was forced to run, only time will tell in the end but today’s win, her first in any sort of graded stake, saw her beat three of the best fillies and mares in the game so things are going well for her.

2nd    Perfectly Pink       The Freakshow        Davis D

Started slowly and looked a forlorn hope until all the horses fanned out and left the rail clear. With closer’s being slowed down she couldn’t make up the lost ground in the two furlong sprint that developed but ran a super race to be second and lost nothing in defeat. The BC Fillies and Mares Turf looks tailor made for her.

3rd      Ewa Beach     The American      Prat F

It was good to see her back to her old self after a poor run last time and one really feels she is crying out for further than this these days. These fillies and mares will meet again and the table will no doubt be turned a few times in the run up to the BC.

4th      Yankee Stadium     Smokey Stover       Ferrer J C

She is definitely missing the weight break she got last year because although she ran a nice race and was only beaten a half length you get the feeling she needs to hit the development curve again before she can beat the older girls. I have no doubt that on another day in another race she could beat all of these so her day will still come if her trainer can resist the pull of the paddock.
