BC Fillies & Mares Turf Was Nothing Less Then La Terrifiant

While it has been some eight years since a four year old has captured this title, and another thirteen seasons since jockey Velazquez J R won this event with Catachresis ( Team 7 Illusions ), La Terrifiant has shown that good horse race well, but Great horses give it all they got to be spectacular!

  • Santa Anita Park – One Mile and a Quarter- Turf Course

Snatched from trainer Jive Inc back last season in April after a juvenile career that had her winning the Gr. II Demoiselle and the prestigeous BC Juvenile Fillies event with Velazquez aboard for that affair, La Terrifiant seems to instinctively know that when she is in a topnotch event, she shows what it is that she is made of by the time she reaches the wire.

Again just like last season in the BC Distaff race, she would find the number 14 post her home for the day. Many trainers would not wish that on their worst enemy in racing, but the trio of Our Athletes, Velazquez and La Terrifiant herself knew they would be put to the test. La Terrifiant sits atop the Turf Route World Rankings with a 117 rating, and she would be third against the boys behind two who won BC events this weekend as well.

From the start of the race, La Terrifiant was poised to stalk the runners here, waiting for the right time to strike. What the betting public was unaware of, was we were going to be into seeing one of the best stretch run duos in sometime. Because Estero Farms Trippi Tip Toe was not going away in the final run for home.

While Alligator ( Keikowin Racing ) was keen to get to the front a half of a length ahead of Mb Stables Easy Time, a group of four just heads apart from one another formed behind this duo. They consisted of Trippi Tip Toe at the rail, Easier Said ( Mb Stables ), Number Nine ( Spankys Barn ) and La Terrifiant. It wouldn’t be until the field hit just past the halfway point down the backstretch that Alligator would show signs of fatigue and start backing away from the top. Easy Time would be handed the lead heading into the far turn, with a determined La Terrifiant moving into second on the outside. Trippi Tip Toe was inside trying to avoid the fade of Alligator but once clear, she was quick to respond to the actions of the Our Athletes entry and put in a brisk charge to get up tight.

Off the turn for home and now into the stretch run with about a furlong and a half to run, and the show was about to start. Trippi Tip Toe was keen at staying at the rail, while La Terrifiant would be in the middle of the track for her run home. Trippi would have a half length lead as they hit the final eighth pole, but Velazquez was determined to get a little more out of his mount this time, no runner-up effort was going to be satisfactory.

Behind these double challengers were the likes of late closer’s Diluted ( Mb Stables ) and Angel Shark ( John Henry ) both sweeping wide off the turn onto the stretch, while Proud Eights ( Estero Farms ) and Easy Time were down near the rail. Maggie Greene ( The Sidley Stud ) and Number Nine ( Spankys Barn ) were in between, looking to strike.

Now the complete focus was on the two competitors on top. With 600 yards to run, La Terrifiant would be in line with Trippi Tip Toe for the race home. Neither were going to give an inch as both riders were asking for everything out of their mounts. As the photo snapped at the line in a time of 1:58.49, the Our Athletes four year old gave his trainer his first ever BC victory in five seasons here at HRP, and I don’t think he will ever forget this win. For the filly, its now her second BC title in three attempts, and her seventh Graded victory in eight career wins. Her earnings now have topped over $4,100.000 , and could be in line for Female Turf Of The Year honors. She did earn two year old filly two seasons ago.

Trippi Tip Toe showed on the day that she had what it took to win, just that her competitor showed just a little more. She did capture the Gr. I Taylor prior to this event, and since going longer, has finished 7 of 9 in the money.

Show runner Diluted managed to fend off Angel Shark to the line in a head to head battle of their own. This seasons record of 8 ( 3-2-2 ) and $750.000 plus in earnings for Diluted is impressive, and she is still a sophomore. As for Angel Shark, she would find herself finishing behind Diluted just like she did in the DMR Oaks this season, and will definitely be looking to change that pattern.
