The California Distaff Handicap returns to Santa Anita on Sunday, October 11, 2026, with eight California-bred fillies and mares competing over 6 1/2 furlongs on turf for a purse of $100.000. The race has produced several memorable winners, including Falling Cougar for Nakamura Stables in 2025, Star Light Beauty for Allinthegate in 2024 and Club Card for Alydar Stables in 2023. Nakamura Stables returns this year with Big Bad Godmother, seeking consecutive victories in the event with different runners. The Sidley Stud sends two contenders, Hawkeye Nation and Cheryl Fury, while the lightly raced, undefeated Mutty adds intrigue to a field featuring several runners changing distances. With recent sprint victories from Big Bad Godmother, Neon Queen and Mutty, this edition presents an interesting contest between established experience and improving form.
The Field
1. Hawkeye Nation — The Sidley Stud — Espinoza V
Projected Odds: 5-1
Hawkeye Nation brings a substantial record of turf success into the California Distaff Handicap, having won six of 18 lifetime starts and accumulated earnings of $204.640. The four-year-old has made 15 turf appearances, winning six, and has demonstrated versatility across both sprint and route distances.
Her most relevant performance came in the Irish O’Brien at Santa Anita on March 21, when she raced on the lead through the first two calls before finishing third over today’s exact course and distance. That performance establishes that she can compete at this level in a 6 1/2-furlong turf sprint.
Her subsequent campaign has been less consistent. She captured the Wasted Tears at Lone Star Park over 1 1/16 miles in June, but followed with sixth-place finishes in the Daisycutter and an allowance at Fort Erie, along with a fifth in the Solana Beach at Del Mar.
The Daisycutter is particularly noteworthy because she led through the opening two calls of the five-furlong event before dropping to sixth. That result raises a question about whether she can sustain an aggressive early position against today’s competition.
Hawkeye Nation has a credible winning chance, particularly if she reproduces her Irish O’Brien performance. Her experience at Santa Anita and demonstrated ability at the distance are advantages, although her recent results make her somewhat less dependable than the leading contenders.
2. Mutty — Gdp Inc — Hernandez J J
Projected Odds: 4-1
Mutty is the least experienced runner in the field but also one of the most intriguing. The three-year-old has made only two lifetime starts and won both, earning $10.200 while demonstrating an effective finishing kick.
Her debut came in a five-furlong turf maiden at Penn National on July 16. She advanced from fifth to take command at the second call and completed the race with a two-length victory.
She returned on August 31 in a five-furlong turf allowance at Louisiana Downs, where she settled fourth early, advanced to third and then captured the race by one length.
Both performances indicate that Mutty is comfortable racing behind the early leaders before producing her decisive move. That running pattern could be particularly valuable if several of today’s more experienced runners contest the pace.
The principal questions concern distance and class. Mutty has never raced beyond five furlongs, and neither of her victories came against stakes competition. She now faces a significant increase in both distance and opposition.
Nevertheless, an undefeated record and two successful late advances suggest that she has considerable potential.
Mutty has a legitimate winning chance, although her lack of stakes experience introduces uncertainty. She is a dangerous contender if she handles the additional distance and maintains her effectiveness against stronger competition.
3. Cheryl Fury — The Sidley Stud — Rosario J
Projected Odds: 10-1
Cheryl Fury has developed into a productive California-bred turf runner, winning six of 13 lifetime starts and earning $105.770. Her record includes four turf victories from eight appearances, and she has demonstrated the ability to compete successfully in state-bred stakes company.
Her most significant recent achievement came in the Valentine at Santa Anita on May 23, where she advanced from fourth to third, remained fourth at the third call and then finished strongly to capture the one-mile turf event.
That victory provides evidence of her effectiveness over the Santa Anita turf course, although the California Distaff represents a different challenge.
Her recent campaign has been concentrated on route races. She finished seventh in the Grade III Eatontown at Monmouth Park in June and fourth in a 1 1/16-mile allowance at Belterra Park in August.
Importantly, all 13 of her lifetime starts have been classified as route races. She has no demonstrated sprint experience, making the reduction to 6 1/2 furlongs a meaningful unknown.
Cheryl Fury has an outside winning chance. Her winning record and Santa Anita stakes victory deserve respect, but she must demonstrate that her route-running ability can translate into an effective turf sprint.
4. Big Bad Godmother — Nakamura Stables — Alvarado F T
Projected Odds: 3-1
Big Bad Godmother enters the California Distaff Handicap in improving form, having won three of her last seven starts and accumulated lifetime earnings of $101.580. Her overall record of three victories, four seconds and one third from nine starts reflects a high level of consistency.
Her latest appearance produced a victory in a five-furlong turf optional claimer at Del Mar on August 29. She settled fifth through the opening two calls before delivering a strong finish to win by three-quarters of a length.
That victory followed another success at Louisiana Downs on July 22, where she won a 7 1/2-furlong turf allowance after racing second through the first three calls.
Those two performances are particularly relevant because they demonstrate effectiveness at distances on either side of today’s 6 1/2 furlongs.
Earlier in the year, she recorded consecutive runner-up finishes in turf route allowances at Tampa Bay Downs and another second on soft turf at Lone Star Park. She also finished third in a one-mile optional claimer at Santa Anita in March.
Her recent turf workouts at Santa Anita have been encouraging, including two five-furlong efforts in late September and early October that each ranked second among the recorded workouts on their respective dates.
Nakamura Stables won this race in 2025 with Falling Cougar, giving the stable an opportunity to capture consecutive editions.
Big Bad Godmother has a very strong winning chance. Her recent victories, ability to adapt to different running positions and experience across multiple turf distances make her one of the most appealing contenders.
5. Gracelyn — Mo Mentum Farm — Maldonado E
Projected Odds: 18-1
Gracelyn enters with two victories from 16 lifetime starts and earnings of $206.230. Although she has accumulated respectable earnings, her recent racing has been concentrated on longer distances, and she faces a substantial change in race conditions.
Her most recent appearance was a third-place finish in a 1 1/16-mile dirt allowance at Belmont on September 27. Before that, she finished sixth in the Violet on soft turf at Monmouth Park and fourth in the Osunit at Del Mar.
Her strongest recent turf performance came in a one-mile allowance at Woodbine on June 28, where she advanced from third to second before taking command and winning by one length.
She also finished second in a 1 1/8-mile Woodbine allowance in May after leading at the third call.
Those performances demonstrate that she can compete successfully on turf, but they do not establish her suitability for a 6 1/2-furlong sprint. Her recent form has also been somewhat inconsistent.
Gracelyn has a limited winning chance based on the available evidence. She would need to demonstrate a level of sprint effectiveness not established by her recent past performances.
6. Neon Queen — Onlineracingclub.com — Rispoli U
Projected Odds: 7-2
Neon Queen arrives in excellent recent form, having won her last two starts and six of 15 lifetime races. The four-year-old has earned $201.520, with five victories and four seconds from 12 turf appearances.
Her most recent victory came in a five-furlong turf optional claimer at Parx on September 15. She raced third through the opening calls before advancing to win by one-quarter of a length.
Before that, she captured a 5 1/2-furlong turf optional claimer at Monmouth Park on yielding ground on July 18. She began third, advanced to second, took command at the third call and held on for a three-quarter-length victory.
Those performances demonstrate both her current form and her ability to compete effectively in turf sprints.
Her earlier campaign included a fourth-place finish in another Monmouth turf sprint and a second in a one-mile optional claimer at Turf Paradise. She has shown versatility across different distances and turf conditions.
Her recent Santa Anita turf workout on October 7 provides additional evidence of current preparation.
The primary question is class. Her recent victories have come in optional claiming company rather than stakes competition, so she must demonstrate that she can reproduce those performances against stronger opposition.
Neon Queen has a strong winning chance. Her recent sprint victories, tactical speed and consistent turf record make her one of the leading contenders.
7. Sophos — First Flight Stable — Kimura K
Projected Odds: 15-1
Sophos has accumulated six victories from 24 lifetime starts and earnings of $145.710, but her turf record presents an unusual contrast to her overall success.
Although she has made nine turf appearances, she has yet to win on that surface. However, she has finished second four times and third three times, indicating that she can compete effectively on turf without having secured a victory.
Her two most recent appearances were runner-up finishes in one-mile turf allowances at Louisiana Downs and Woodbine. In both races, she settled toward the rear of the field before advancing during the later stages.
Those performances suggest that she possesses a useful late-running style, which could become relevant if the early pace is contested.
However, her recent success has largely come in route races, and she has not demonstrated the same level of effectiveness in turf sprints.
She has also changed ownership recently, having been auctioned by Mb Stables on September 20 before entering for First Flight Stable.
Sophos has an outside winning chance. Her late-running tendencies could help her improve her position during the final stages, but her winless turf record and limited recent sprint evidence make her difficult to support as a leading selection.
8. Anita Magroin — TwinTowersRacing — Geroux F
Projected Odds: 20-1
Anita Magroin is a three-year-old with one victory from 10 lifetime starts and earnings of $44.480. Her record includes one victory, two seconds and two thirds from six turf appearances.
Her most recent start produced a second-place finish in a 1 1/16-mile turf allowance at Monmouth Park on September 6. She raced third through the opening two calls, advanced to second and maintained that position through the finish.
Earlier in the season, she finished fifth in a one-mile state-bred optional claimer at Del Mar and third in a one-mile turf allowance at Louisiana Downs.
Her lone victory came in a one-mile turf maiden at Turf Paradise on April 9, when she advanced from sixth to fourth before taking command and winning by one length.
All of those performances indicate that her strongest recent form has come in route races rather than sprints.
The California Distaff represents a significant class increase and a reduction in distance. She must demonstrate that she can compete against more accomplished runners while adapting to a faster sprinting environment.
Anita Magroin has a limited winning chance. Her recent second-place finish is encouraging, but her overall record and lack of proven turf sprint form leave her facing a difficult assignment.
Pace Structure & Race Outlook
The California Distaff Handicap presents an interesting pace scenario because several contenders have demonstrated the ability to race prominently, while others prefer to settle behind the early leaders.
Hawkeye Nation is one of the most likely early pace participants. She led through the opening two calls in both the Irish O’Brien at Santa Anita and the Daisycutter at Del Mar. Her early speed could place her among the leaders from the outset.
Neon Queen also possesses tactical speed. She has raced second or third through the opening calls in several recent turf races, including both of her latest victories. She does not necessarily require the lead but is capable of remaining close to the early pace.
Big Bad Godmother offers greater flexibility. She raced second through the opening stages of her Louisiana Downs victory but settled fifth in her subsequent Del Mar win before advancing decisively. That versatility could be an important advantage.
Mutty has demonstrated a similar ability to settle behind the leaders and produce a late move. Both of her victories came after she improved from positions behind the early pace.
Cheryl Fury and Anita Magroin have generally competed at longer distances, making their early positioning in a 6 1/2-furlong sprint less predictable.
Sophos has shown a preference for racing farther behind the leaders before improving during the later stages. She could benefit from a demanding early pace, although her record suggests she may be more effective at longer distances.
Gracelyn has demonstrated tactical speed in route races but has limited evidence of comparable effectiveness at sprint distances.
The likely pace scenario involves Hawkeye Nation establishing or contesting the early lead, with Neon Queen positioned nearby. Big Bad Godmother and Mutty appear capable of settling behind that pair before making their moves.
Big Bad Godmother receives the selection because her recent form combines two consecutive turf victories with proven effectiveness at distances ranging from five to 7 1/2 furlongs. She has demonstrated the ability to win from different running positions and enters with encouraging Santa Anita turf workouts.
Neon Queen represents the principal danger after winning her last two turf sprints. Mutty is a particularly interesting contender because of her undefeated record, although the increase in distance and class introduces uncertainty.
Hawkeye Nation remains a serious consideration because of her previous third-place finish over the exact Santa Anita course and distance.
Projected Order
1. Big Bad Godmother — 3-1
2. Neon Queen — 7-2
3. Mutty — 4-1
4. Hawkeye Nation — 5-1
Projected Winner: Big Bad Godmother — 3-1
Main Danger: Neon Queen — 7-2
