Glorious Song Attracts Twelve

Glorious Song Stakes
$125.00 For Fillies Two Years Old
7 Furlongs – Dirt
Woodbine – October 11, 2026

Yearlings are on the ground, and I am sure dreams are already taking hold around them. Dreams of what can be and will be: you know, the stuff that keeps us waking up. However, those yearlings have a long way to go and two-year-olds are still the stuff of immediate dreams, the here and now. Next year’s big prestigious three-year-old races are not far off. This year’s Breeders Cup maybe? Along those lines, twelve two-year-old fillies will line up for the twentieth running of the Glorious Song Stakes on Sunday to try to take the next step in their young careers. For most of the field it will be pumpkin time but for one (barring any dead heats) the glass slipper will fit. Who among the twelve is the belle of this ball?

1. Varmint (Jive Inc./S. Civaci) Undefeated. That’s always sexy. She is two for two and has won on both a fast and sloppy track which may be relevant since as of this writing there is a 74% chance of a wet track. This will be her first stakes attempt.

2. Ginger Cousin (The Sidley Stud/W.T. Buick) Gray filly has won two of her four starts including her last race which was an N1X allowance on a muddy track which as we have already noted could be a critical factor should the forecast prove to be accurate. She is also making her stakes debut.

3. Blue But True (Mb Stables/S. Chermetz) She won her first two races and then was privately purchased by current trainer for $45.00. She then gave a Cal-bred stakes race a try and while she didn’t maintain her unbeaten streak she didn’t embarrass herself finishing a fast closing fourth missing by only a half length. She gets an extra furlong to close into this time.

4. Death Certicate (John Henry/R.W Walcott) She is already stakes placed having finished third in the My Dear Stakes in July. She followed that up with an eight place finish in the G3 Adirondack at Saratoga which was better than it sounds. She charged from eleventh place to only miss hitting the wire first by a length so that eight is misleading. Don’t disregard.

5. Speedy Heat (The Sidley Stud/S. Jones) Like the filly to her inside she also gave the My Dear Stakes a try after breaking her breaking her maiden. She did not make much of an impression finishing tenth. She then finished sixth in The Seeking the Ante a Ny-bred stake at Saratoga. That doesn’t seem very encouraging but note that if the rain does come she broke her maiden by two lengths on a sloppy track.

6. Ginger The Bear (Night Rider Stables/Su Singh) She broke her maiden at first asking in July. She has not been since. She was purchased for $9.00 at auction in September and must being showing her new connections enough to warrant jumping right into stakes company. Unbeaten and intriguing dark horse.

7. Mapuche (D J C Racing Stables/D. Moran) Homebred filly has not been off the board in three races. Following her first start maiden breaker she missed winning her follow up allowance effort by a long neck and then was second in her stakes debut. Mapuche definitely has the competitive gene and should make her presence felt.

8. What About It (Hammelot Farm/P. Moran) Was impressive winning her first three races including The Dah Stakes in July. She was then a good fifth in The Untapable Stakes just a length off of the winner in fifth place. That was a detour on the grass and she now comes back to the dirt where she has not yet been beaten to the wire.

9. Coronada (Nakamura Stable/C. Jordan) She broke her maiden and then met up with a couple of today’s rivals in the My Dear Stakes where she finished sixth in between Death Certificate and Speedy Heat. She then nearly went wire to wire in a N1X allowance at Saratoga just giving way late. Will have to navigate even more distance this time if she wants the flowers.

10. Ghost Shark (Axeman/L. Contreras) She became a stakes winner in her last race when she won the Muskoka Stakes for Canadian breds. Two other things from that race that speak in her favor are the fact that it was at Woodbine and it was on a wet track. All of that bodes well for her but she draws a challenging post.

11. Calm Carol (Jokerjoes/L. Salles) She was a winner on debut and she was sold right after that win for $76.00. She has since made two starts for her new barn and both were encouraging in the money finishes. She was second in a N2L allowance losing by a scant neck. She then finished a good third at the Glorious Song distance at Saratoga. Gets her first stakes test today but seems to have talent and shouldn’t be counted out.

12. Big Tipper (TwinTowersRacing/E.J. Wilson) TwinTowersRacing homebred draws the outside post which can’t be counted as a positive. She has won two out of four starts and was last seen in the G1 Spinaway at Saratoga. She finished in ninth that day two lengths from the winner. She seeks some theoretical class relief in her second stakes attempt.

Two year olds change so fast and the large field is full of limited resumes so it makes picking winners tough. With the excuse out of the way here are the picks. In this order: Death Certificate, Mapuche, What About It, Varmint.
