California Flag Handicap
6 1/2 Furlongs Turf Stake Purse $100.00 Three Year Olds & Upward Foaled In CA. At SA
1st Bronx Copper Langley Farms 96-1 HRP 5-1 SRF
As for my part of Bronx Copper‘s spectacular upset, I gave him credit for being a nice horse and placed him in my handicap at only 5-1. Much kinder than the general public which had him at 96-1 for his second straight turf win and third consecutive win, and with this win, he did something never done before in the fourteen editions of this race; he won as a three-year-old. Bronx Copper came out of the gate in third forcing the pace and started a challenge around the far turn, taking the lead entering the stretch and prevailed at the wire under a drive.
2nd Hard Worker The Sidley Stud 9-2 HRP 2-1 SRF
Hard Worker continued his record of finishing second in every turf sprint he’s ever been in. My odds had him to do that again, but my handicap said he could do better. Turns out he couldn’t… by a quarter-length. He came out of the starting gate and settled into a close stalk which he maintained to the stretch where he set down to a steady close but could not overcome the winner’s drive.
3rd Suspect The Worst Nakamura Stables *7-2 HRP 10-1 SRF
Well, you heard it here first! My 10-1 longshot special Suspect The Worst turned out to be the favourite just as I worried, taking absolutely no one by surprise. He came out of the gate running, took the lead coming home and weakened ever so slightly to wire to lose by only half-length. 4th Lord Cherokee Threshold 8-1 HRP 5-1 SRF
Marathon specialist Lord Cherokee is quickly learning these turf sprints as this is only his third such in a lifetime of 43 races. At age seven and a half, he is already running within a half-length of winning a stakes race. He stalked from sixth most of the race until they turned into the stretch where he closed with courage to finish in the photo for second.
