CA Derby Could Earn Rookie Trainer Shermfirm Stables First

With only twelve starts since his first race here on the 8th of March, the closest Shermfirm came to a victory was when Astern missed by a neck. He now sends out a runner from this seasons Gr. I FL Derby, and could very well find the wire on top against this group of runners.

  • CA Derby- Purse $100.000
  • Golden Gate Park- For Three Year olds
  • One Mile and a sixteenth in distance- Main track

La Pavoniere make a bold effort in this years FL Derby at the end of March where he closed to finish just three lengths shy in fifth of Anoush Command, a major favorite to win the Derby. He already has a stakes title to his credit in the $100 LA Legacy race under previous owner Smokey Stover, and seems to find the route distances more to his liking. If the instruction are set perfectly and he can be positioned well off the turn for home, this could very well be the most memorable first win for a young trainer here at HRP. He does has the services of Bejarano in the tack, so that’s a plus! So who will be his top challengers out of the gate?

More then likely setting the pace for this affair on top will be the likes of Black And Red ( Australia Wide ) and Deadly Rivalry ( Nakamura Stables) who will break from the gates right next to one another. If they get in a head to head battle early and set a sub 46 fraction for the opening half mile, it could very well setup a late charge from a number of runners in this field. These two runners will definitely need to slow down the middle point of the race to leave them enough to be stellar in the lane.

From the rail will break John Henry’s Came Home. In seven career starts this sophomore has only been able to get his maiden victory in his opener of the season. A much sharper finish in the Gr. III Davis would have earned him better marks for this race, but maybe the removal of Lasix in his most recent could get him turned around.

Post two will have Rampage Stable’s Full Of Life. He has been competing in stakes affairs in his past three starts, but if his astounding 999.99-1 odds in his most recent Gr. III Ruby Stakes is any key, this could be another tough go of it. Does like to close, and Ortiz is returning in the irons from his last, but needs to be a lot closer early on to be effective.

Skipping out to post six we will find Night Rider StablesRockets Up The Rear. Broke his maiden in mid November last season after four previous attempts where he finished in the top four. Opened this season in an Alw22.5 race coming up short by four. Trainer went back to the training track to see if he could find the answer, and he does have a bullet work here just three days prior to the event. Might be tight?

Pish ( Gdp Inc) grabs post seven today and that one is coming off an Alw47 victory after being claimed out of his previous race. Trainer does have a keen eye for picking out a horse at the right time in his career, and he could very well make a sharp effort in this event. Has gone three straight trips to the winners circle and with the likes of Johnny V in the irons, he could possible make this number four.

Outside post for this event will hold Plenty Supercharged ( Fractious ). Captured an Alw57 affair in a photo by a neck over at SA, then stepped up to the Gr. III SUN Derby looking for points for the Derby, but ended up being a dismal eighth after some trouble early in that event. The smaller field here should be more to his liking, and Desormeaux takes over for Van Dyke in the saddle. Can’t be left out of the hunt right from gate if he is to make his mark on this title.
