Can There Be a Repeat Winner in BC Turf Sprint?

Three Year Olds and Up

Here we are to look at this years field for the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint and this year the defending winner is back to try and keep his title as the best turf sprinter. A good full field has been entered and beautiful weather to boot. Let’s take a look at the field.

1. Pollinate (11-5-3-0 $455.000), trained by Mb Stables

First runner in the field and first of three for Mb Stables and this horse is coming into this race off of a win in the Nearctic at Woodbine going six furlongs. He could stand a big shot in this field with a good field from the inside post.

2. Southern Fame (16-4-1-4 $338.000), trained by Mb Stables

Second runner in the field for Mb Stables right here and this horse has two graded stakes wins on the year in the Connaught Cup and the Troy Stakes. He could have a shot although I honestly think this may be too short of a trip for him.

3. Genghis (16-3-2-1 $412.220), trained by Arindel

Very out of form horse here and I just am not really seeing much based on his form that would make me pick this horse to end anywhere in here. I am not even sure turf is his preferred surface but you never know he could shock. I would not bet on him pulling off the upset though.

4. Puako (14-6-3-1 $366.680), trained by Smokey Stover

Here is a horse that I think may be a little overlooked but I do think he stand a pretty good shot if he gets a good trip. He is very fast and just seems to not be able to get the win in these big races. I think he could have a sneaky chance of winning.

5. Red Cup (24-4-3-3 $1007.840), trained by John Henry

Usually a deep closer in most of his races and to be honest this five and a half furlong distance could be too short for him unless they absolutely fly and fall apart up front. He could pick up some pieces late though if they go fast enough.

6. Gleaming Spirit (37-17-4-4 $2316.900), trained by Mb Stables

Last for Mb Stables and last years winner of this race but it does seem obvious this is not the same horse coming into this race as it was last year. He has not been running as good this year but maybe he is sitting on a good one. Not going to count him out but would look elsewhere first.

7. Korean Bolt (12-5-2-1 $416.320), trained by Arindel

One thing to be sure about this horse is that he does seem to like the five and a half furlong distance. Last two races were not his best but he has not had ideal conditions in either of those races either. He could have a little chance in this race.

8. One Man Show (12-4-3-2 $530.700), trained by Maxmillion Farm

Good three year old turf runner here and he has been running good when he is in three year old only races. Was second in the grade one Highlander by a nose so I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes close in here. Could have a decent chance with a big run.

9. The Grandmaster (30-11-5-7 $1750.280), trained by John Henry

Runner number two for John Henry in the field and this is a horse who is coming into this race off of two runner up finishes in a row in graded stakes races. He has been close his last two and if he runs a big race he could pick up a couple pieces late.

10. Laffin Funky (12-4-2-1 $247.670), trained by Maxmillion Farm

One for one over the Keeneland turf course and distance is this horse right here and he won the grade two Shakertown way back in the spring. He was helped by the weight allowance that day but he does have a win over the track so that could be beneficial.

11. Salili (21-6-3-3 $687.190), trained by Team 7 Illusions

Next up in the field here and this horse mainly earned his way into this race by a winning the grade three Turf Monster at Parx. He won nicely that day and does like the turf with a forty percent winning clip on it. Has yet to prove he is near the top of this division though.

12. Cellmate (24-8-3-6 $217.770), trained by Bears Stable

Rising from the bottom of the claiming ranks earlier on this year and now having a spot in the Breeders Cup is s cool thing for this horse. He won the Green Flash earlier this summer and that paved his way into this race. He will have to run a huge race to win though.

13. Siberian Prince (45-10-7-5 $1668.280), trained by Sir Daniel Martin

Not often you see a Breeders Cup winner at two still competing at this high of a level at this age but he is still winning races. He won the Eddie D in his last start so the possibility of winning a second Breeders Cup isn’t out of the question. Tough post to overcome though.

14. Flooded (26-11-4-2 $794.640), trained by Estero Farms

Final up in the field and this horse also won a race at Keeneland already this year and that was the Woodford a month ago. He is coming into this race off of a good win over this track so that is good for him and if he can get any decent trip from this post he has a shot.

15. Goldbracletparade (39-8-7-8 $292.870), trained by Hunterman Stable

Summary

Very tough race this is and turf sprints are always tough to win and pick a winner out of. My top choice is Flooded but it will be tough to win from that outside post for sure. Good luck to all in the field.
