Charleys Latte Take The Withers

AQU 2     The Withers (GIII)

$250.000              3yo       1 1/8m   Dirt           122lbs

Charleys Latte showed us all that speed does in fact live at HRP.  Staying just behind the early pace, he moved up quickly to take command on the turn and rolled to a length in in a final time of 1:48.19 for the mile and an eighth and a BIG win in The Withers (GIII).  Sars showed his speed as well but just could not hold off the winner, settling for the second spot with fast closing Better Back Off in third.

Away from the gate and making the short run into the clubhouse turn, Sars was on the early gas, Undaunted Rebel next to him, City Sniper, Mister Machismo and Charleys Latte, Lord City was next, All Day, then Better Back Off, Temple Of Gloom and Lake Success.

On to and now midway down the backstretch, Sars now in front by two lengths, Charleys Latte skimming the rail, All Day three wide and Undaunted Rebel between that pair.  City Sniper out wide, Master Machismo along the inside, Temple Of Gloom, Lord City was Next and Lake Success was still at the back of the pack.

Down the backside and now into the far turn with three furlongs to run, Sars continued to show the way by a length and three quarters.  Charleys Latte was inching up on the leader, a gap of two back to All Day, Undaunted Rebel on his inside,  another two lengths to City Sniper, Better Back Off on his inside, Mister Machismo on the rail, Temple Of Gloom another length back, then Lake Success and Lord City bringing up the
rear.

Inside the furlong marker and to the finish, Chraleys Latte up to look Sars in the eye and move on by, taking the lead, Sars digging in but not finding enough as Charleys Latte went on to score by two.  Sars settling for the runner up spot, a length in front of Better Back Off in third.  All Day was fourth, City Sniper in fifth, Lake Success sixth, Undaunted Rebel seventh, Temple Of Gloom eighth, Mister Machismo ninth and Lord City closed out the field.

Charleys Latte is a black 3yo colt by Pinnacle West – Sweet Mama, by Chai Latte, and he was bred in Cal by Two Hears One Love.  Purchase for $45.000 prior to his racing career, the Estero Farms trained colt has pushed his name up the TC list and his earnings to $191.000 in only four starts.  He’s proven that he can run with any group and we should see more of him as we track the sophomores to Louisville.

Charleys Latte tracked the pace setter, up to challenge entering the lane, moved past, won driving.  Sars broke alertly to set the pace to the lane, could not contain the winner.  Better Back Off taken back early, steady move forward while not a threat to the top pair. All Day broke well, with the pace, could not improve. City Sniper ran evenly. Lake Success was well back, some late foot. Undaunted Rebel raced forwardly, tired. Temple Of Gloom was not a factor. Mister Machismo mid-pack early, tired. Lord City was outrun.
