Coin Collector Looks Ready to Cash In in the KD Juvenile

The KD Juvenile brings a 12-horse field of 2-year-olds to Kentucky Downs on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, for one mile on turf and a purse of $750.000. The race has been run at a mile on turf since its 2021 inception, with Threshold winning twice in 2021 and 2023, Mb Stables taking the 2024 edition with Suit And Tie, and Barcelona Farms winning last year with Fight Clubber. Both of those latter connections return this year: Mb Stables sends out Average Brian and Not Pleased, while Barcelona Farms is represented by Cheveley Fog. Pennington F, who rode the winners in both 2021 and 2023, returns aboard Obi Run Kenobi. With several accomplished dirt runners meeting a smaller group already proven on grass, the central question is whether established class or demonstrated turf-route ability carries the greater weight.

1. The Mighty Beav — Jerry Garcia Racing / Espinoza V — Odds: 12-1

The Mighty Beav is still seeking his first victory after two dirt starts, but there are encouraging elements for his turf debut. He finished second by a neck in his debut at Churchill Downs after racing on or very near the lead, then was fourth at Del Mar after again staying close during the early stages. Jerry Garcia Racing has prepared him specifically for the change in surface and distance with consecutive one-mile turf works, including a 1:36.0 move at Kentucky Downs on August 31 that was fastest of one. He has no turf or route race experience, so the assignment requires a substantial step forward, but his early speed and route-oriented preparation give him some upset appeal. Chance: useful longshot with encouraging preparation, but he must prove both the surface and distance.

2. Coin Collector — First Flight Stable / Carmouche K — Odds: 7-2

Coin Collector owns one of the most directly applicable performances in the field. After finishing third in his first turf try at five furlongs, he stretched to 1 1/16 miles on Saratoga’s firm inner turf on August 2 and won by two lengths, leading throughout. That victory gives him something most of his rivals lack: an actual turf-route win beyond today’s one-mile distance. His career turf record is one win and one third from two starts, and he has followed his Saratoga victory with several turf works, including a six-furlong move over the Kentucky Downs course on August 29. Chance: very strong. Proven route stamina, established firm-turf form and natural pace make him the narrow selection.

3. Average Brian — Mb Stables / Curtis B — Odds: 20-1

Average Brian has yet to win in two starts, but he improved considerably in his latest race. After finishing ninth on a muddy track in his debut, he led through the first three calls of a 6 1/2-furlong state-bred maiden at Del Mar before settling for second. That effort showed meaningful progress, but he now makes both his turf and route debut. Mb Stables has prepared him with a six-furlong firm-turf work and a one-mile firm-turf drill at Del Mar, providing some foundation for the transition. Chance: improving colt from a connection that won this race in 2024, but he faces a difficult class, surface and distance jump while still a maiden.

4. Commanding Sky — Nakamura Stables / Centeno D E — Odds: 8-1

Commanding Sky enters as a two-time winner from four starts and arrives in particularly good form. After winning his maiden at Lone Star, he finished third in an allowance and then captured a six-furlong allowance at Ellis Park on August 22, advancing from fifth to fourth to third before getting up by a neck. His race record shows the ability to make progress rather than depending upon the lead. The major uncertainty is straightforward: he has never raced on turf and has not yet started in a route race. His recent published works have also been on dirt rather than turf. Chance: legitimate on current form and winning ability, but the one-mile turf assignment requires him to answer two significant questions at once.

5. Zee Command — TwinTowersRacing / Sanchez M J — Odds: 9-2

Zee Command merits serious consideration because his latest start already answered today’s two most important questions. On August 1 at Del Mar, he made his first turf and route appearance at one mile on firm grass and won by two lengths. He raced second through each of the first three calls before taking command. His previous dirt form had been less distinguished, making the immediate improvement on turf particularly noteworthy. TwinTowersRacing followed that victory with a one-mile turf work at Monmouth. Chance: major contender. He has already won under virtually today’s exact distance-and-surface conditions and possesses enough tactical speed to secure a favorable early position.

6. Buescher — Luz International / Gaffalione T — Odds: 10-1

Buescher has shown ability in three dirt starts. He won a Saratoga maiden at 5 1/2 furlongs by taking command at the third call and then moved into graded company, finishing fourth in the Best Pal (G3) at Del Mar on August 8 after racing seventh and eighth early. His late improvement in that race is useful as he stretches in distance. He has no turf starts and no route races, although a five-furlong firm-turf work at Saratoga on August 18 provides some preparation for the surface change. Chance: dangerous if his dirt ability transfers to grass, but his lack of turf and route experience prevents placing him with the proven grass runners.

7. Time And Tide — Nakamura Stables / Santana R Jr — Odds: 4-1

Time And Tide may be the most accomplished racehorse in the field despite having no turf experience. He has won two of three starts, breaking his maiden at Saratoga before capturing the $150.000 Overnight stakes at Woodbine on August 15. In that latest race he progressed from fourth to third and then first before winning by a length. His lifetime earnings stand at $144.600, and his recent race progression has been consistently positive. The challenge is that all three starts have come on dirt and none has been beyond 6 1/2 furlongs. Chance: one of the principal threats on class and current form. If he transfers his ability to turf and handles the mile, he is capable of winning.

8. Tarte du Guerre — Jerry Garcia Racing / Hernandez R M — Odds: 20-1

Tarte du Guerre remains a maiden after three dirt starts but has finished second twice. He displayed early speed in each of those runner-up performances, leading at Churchill Downs before finishing second and again setting the pace at Del Mar before settling for second. He now makes his turf and route debut. A one-mile firm-turf work at Del Mar on August 23 provides relevant preparation, but his race record does not yet establish him beyond 5 1/2 furlongs. Chance: potential pace factor and possible improver on turf, although winning a stakes race while making his surface and distance debut would represent a substantial step.

9. Snorlax — Bigchief Stables / Asmussen E — Odds: 6-1

Snorlax is one of the more intriguing turf runners. After finishing fifth in his dirt debut, he switched to firm turf at Lone Star and won a 7 1/2-furlong state-bred maiden by one length. He raced second at each of the first three calls before taking over late, a pattern that should translate naturally to the additional half-furlong. His subsequent preparation has been entirely turf-oriented, including two seven-furlong works and two five-furlong works at Del Mar. Chance: strong. He has not faced the strongest competition in the field, but his turf victory, tactical running style and distance-oriented works make him a credible winner.

10. Obi Run Kenobi — The Sidley Stud / Pennington F — Odds: 25-1

Obi Run Kenobi has one victory from three starts, with that win coming over a sloppy 4 1/2 furlongs at Charles Town. He subsequently moved into the Hoover Stakes at Belterra Park and finished ninth after racing near the rear. He has never competed on turf or beyond sprint distances. His preparation does include a one-mile firm-turf work at Monmouth and a six-furlong turf drill at Parx. Pennington F provides an interesting historical connection, having ridden the KD Juvenile winner in both 2021 and 2023. Chance: outsider. The jockey history is notable, but the horse still needs to demonstrate a major improvement in both class and distance while changing surfaces.

11. Cheveley Fog — Barcelona Farms / Velazquez J R — Odds: 5-1

Cheveley Fog brings substantial dirt-class credentials into his turf debut. He has won two of four races and captured the Sanford (G3) at Saratoga on July 4 after rallying from seventh to sixth to fourth before taking the lead. Most recently he finished seventh in the $250.000 ELP Juvenile at seven furlongs after beginning well back. His career earnings of $189.520 are among the strongest in the field. Unlike several of the other surface-switchers, however, his recent published works shown here have been on dirt rather than turf. Barcelona Farms won this race last year with Fight Clubber. Chance: high on proven class, but turf and the one-mile distance remain untested variables.

12. Not Pleased — Mb Stables / Lopez P — Odds: 15-1

Not Pleased has yet to win but has finished second in each of his last two starts. He came from fifth to second in a 5 1/2-furlong state-bred maiden at Aqueduct and then raced first and second through much of a six-furlong Saratoga maiden before again finishing runner-up. He now makes his first start on turf and first start around a route, but Mb Stables has given him an extensive grass preparation consisting of two one-mile turf works and two six-furlong turf drills. Chance: interesting longshot. His repeated runner-up efforts and substantial turf preparation suggest potential improvement, but he is being asked to break his maiden in a $750.000 stakes race.

Pace Structure & Race Outlook

The early pace could be one of the most important elements of this KD Juvenile because several entrants have shown a preference for racing close to the lead.

Coin Collector led throughout his 1 1/16-mile turf victory and is the most obvious candidate to establish the tempo. Zee Command raced second through the first three calls of his one-mile turf win, while Snorlax also sat second throughout most of his successful 7 1/2-furlong turf debut. Tarte du Guerre has shown front-running speed on dirt, and Average Brian led through the first three calls of his most recent race.

That creates the possibility of a legitimate rather than leisurely pace.

The potential beneficiaries include Time And Tide, who has shown he can advance from behind the leaders, and Commanding Sky, who rallied from fifth to win his latest allowance. Cheveley Fog produced an even more pronounced progression when winning the Sanford, coming from seventh early before taking over late.

The contrast is particularly interesting because the most accomplished runners are not necessarily the ones with proven turf form. Time And Tide and Cheveley Fog possess the strongest stakes credentials, while Coin Collector, Zee Command and Snorlax have already demonstrated that they can win on turf at seven and one-half furlongs or farther.

At one mile, I prefer proven turf-route ability over the need to project a successful surface conversion.

Projected Finish

1st — Coin Collector — 7-2
2nd — Time And Tide — 4-1
3rd — Zee Command — 9-2
4th — Cheveley Fog — 5-1
5th — Snorlax — 6-1

Projected Winner — Coin Collector

Coin Collector receives the selection because his August 2 Saratoga victory provides the strongest direct evidence for this specific assignment. He has already won on firm turf at 1 1/16 miles, farther than Wednesday’s one-mile distance, and he did so by controlling the race from the beginning. First Flight Stable has also given him a Kentucky Downs turf work since that victory.

Main Danger — Time And Tide at 4-1. He has yet to race on turf, but his two consecutive victories culminated in a $150.000 stakes win, giving him a level of established class that most of the field has not yet reached.

Best Value — Snorlax at 6-1. His 7 1/2-furlong turf maiden victory and subsequent series of longer turf works suggest that today’s mile is a logical progression.

Live Longshot — Commanding Sky at 8-1. He is already a two-time winner and comes directly from an allowance victory in which he advanced steadily through the field. His entire race record is on dirt, but his recent progression makes him one of the more interesting surface-switchers.
