Track/Stakes Record-1:47.29 (Combat Wombat-2021)

For the 4th consecutive year, Combat Wombat has won a graded stakes.  In Saturday’s G2 Fayette, the 6yo gelding shattered the KEE track record as he crossed the wire in the sharp time of 1:47.29.  Sent-off as a bit of an afterthought at nearly 10-1, Combat Wombat settled into a stalking trip before tipping off the rail and taking control through the lane enroute to a one length victory in the 11/8 KEE finale for 2021.

Mad King and Cherokee Twins were sent hard from the gate and established an advantage on the field.  Combat Wombat broke well and was allowed to settle about two lengths off of the front-runners while racing on the rail.  The first “move” of the race came from Puget Sound as that runner wasn’t satisfied with being on the outside of a four-horse group in the second flight.  As they hit the first turn, Puget Sound moved forward in an effort to get closer to the rail.  By the time they hit the backstretch, it was a three-way battle for the lead as Puget Sound put his head in front of Cherokee Twins and Mad King to reach the five furlong pole in :47.53.

At the half-mile pole, Combat Wombat tipped off of the rail to the three path and started inching his way forward.  Puget Sound led the field through three-quarters went in 1:11.07, but Cherokee Twins was applying pressure while the eventual winner was just biding his time and looking for clear run before pouncing.  With a furlong to go, Combat Wombat struck the front and looked to spurt away from his rivals.  Toothpaste, the eventual second-place finisher, moved just a moment after the new leader, but that moment was enough for him to find a bit of trouble.

When he couldn’t get inside of a fading Cherokee Twins, Toothpaste had to follow the path of Combat Wombat.  He was keeping pace with the winner, but he never was able to truly threaten him through the latter portion of the KEE stretch.  Bring The Pain came up the rail, from well back, and just secured the show from Cherokee Twins.  Completing the order of finish were Sweetly Chai, Puget Sound, Cp Good Moon, Rockin Rodeo, and Mad King.

Combat Wombat (Combastic o/o Five Be Farl) has now won $3,442.150 and has a career record of 28-9-4-2.  Congratulations to Combat Wombat and Maxmillion Farm for winning the $300.000 G2 Fayette at KEE.
