Dan Patch Enjoys the Shorter Distance in Hendrie Stakes

Hendrie Stakes (Grade 3)- $150.000 Purse
WO- For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
Six and a Half Furlongs on the Dirt
October 23, 2021

There were several interesting stories in the Hendrie Stakes this year, given that many different paths were taken prior to getting to this race. The question would be which one of them would prevail, and we would get our answer on Saturday. The race would be won by Dan Patch, a horse that was last seen going ten furlongs and finishing poorly in the Alabama. It had also been seventeen months since she last ran in a sprint, but after her last race, the trainer, Waldo, had to try something different. Perhaps we will now see her sprinting much more often! Dan Patch gets Waldo his first win in the Hendrie as a trainer and J Lermyte their first as a jockey. Congratulations to them! The race was won in a time of 1:15.20, breaking the stake record by .01! Let’s take a look!

(¼ Mile- :22.93)- No one in the field seemed particularly hurried out of the gate, but it would be Silver Jazzmin grabbing the top spot for The Sidley Stud while having Icy Bay, out of Mwn Racing, running within a half length to her inside. There will be three stalkers, and one of them is our eventual winner, Waldo’s Dan Patch. She runs in the middle of three wide, but would be able to have a clear lane if she wished to move forward. On her inside is the stablemate to the leader, Battle Abbey, and Amaris, out of First Street Stables, is on her outside. Gold Futures is next, running in the middle of the field for TwinTowersRacing, then it’s Secrether (Ekli Stables) and Sweet Distiction (Mwn Racing).

(½ Mile- :45.84, Top Of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Completing the backstretch trip, Silver Jazzmin is able to pull away from Icy Bay and she continues to hold the advantage around the turn as we began to await her new challenger. Icy Bay packed it in quite badly within the turn. That challenger would be Dan Patch, and she would look especially strong from about midway in the turn to reaching the top of the stretch. She made up the ground quickly, and was now about a half length from taking over the lead herself. Amaris, who had been running with her, was still running decently and was third, but was also left behind by Dan Patch. Battle Abbey was not making up any ground, though Secrether was making progress. Gold Futures remained near the back, and we had not seen much out of Sweet Distiction.

(Finish- 1:15.20)- In the stretch, it does not take long for Dan Patch to complete the pass of Silver Jazzmin, and with no one else closing, Waldo could begin to celebrate. Dan Patch would run strong to wire, and would narrowly break the stake record with a comfortable nearly two length win. Silver Jazzmin did enough to the end to remain second in a photo over the late running Secrether. Amaris gets the final piece of the purse, topping Gold Futures, Sweet Distiction, Battle Abbey and eventually, Icy Bay.

About The Winner- Dan Patch, trained by Waldo and ridden to victory by J Lermyte, is a three year old filly by Wicked Moon and is out Lena. She was bred in California as a yearling by Waldo, the only trainer she has ever had! Congratulations to the connections! The win is her fourth in twelve starts, and her third stake win, all being graded. Her career earnings are now $431.000.
