Extra Weight Could Be Key Factor in ONT Derby

The ONT Derby – GIII
11/21/20
WO Race 2 1 1/8M – Dirt
Purse $125.000
Three Year Olds

A field of eight for this years running of the grade three Ontario Derby here at Woodbine Racetrack. A nice field with two recent graded stakes winners who are both having an extra weight allowance against them. Let’s look at the field.

1. Canardly (9-2-2-3 $82.770), trained by Greeko Holdem

First up in the field is one of the New Mexico breds and he is coming off of a win in the Gulch Championship at Zia against the statebreds. Swooped that field format to first but this is a lot tougher field. Wouldn’t be a shocker but a little surprise if he won.

2. Belo Horizonte (12-3-4-1 $306.400), trained by John Henry

One of the graded stakes winners here and he will be carrying the burned of 127 pounds. He won a very tough Kelso Handicap last time but the extra weight is just going to be too much for him to overcome.

3. Home Spirit (10-4-1-3 $132.050), trained by Night Rider Stables

Next up right here and he is coming into this race off of a second place finish in the grade three Oklahoma Derby. He ran well that day and came from off the pace to close well. He could have a good chance in this race.

4. Iguacu Falls (15-3-2-3 $145.150), trained by D J C Racing Stables

Next one to take a look at here and he also ran in the Oklahoma Derby two races back and was next to last that day. Fourth with statebred stakes runners last time sprinting and I just don’t think this horse wants to go long.

5. Inoubliable (12-6-2-2 $347.480), trained by T Boy Racing

The other New Mexico bred runner here who is my horse and he was the winner of the Oklahoma Derby in his last start. He has been getting faster and if the extra two pounds doesn’t get to him I think he stands a very big shot at winning here.

6. Wireless Headset (7-3-2-0 $104.770, trained by Nakamura Stables

Naks runner here and he was second in a first level allowance race in his last start at Parx. He tried the grade two Dandy before that and was beaten soundly. I still think he has some improving to do before he can beat some of these.

7. Out Of Step (10-4-0-0 $23.700), trained by Diablo Diablo

Least successful in the field to this point and he tried the Indiana Derby and British Columbia Derby in his last two starts and was beaten well in both. Has a lot of lengths to make up to have any shot in this field.

8. Siri S Isakoff (14-2-3-4 $111.340), trained by TwinTowers Racing

Last but not least in the field here and he is coming all the way from Calder where he was third in a statebred allowance race on the slop. Off track he’d be one of the favorites but on a fast track he isn’t as good as some of these I think.

Summary

Well the best two in the race I believe are both of the ones that are carrying extra weight. I hate tooting my own horn but I do think having to carry only two pounds extra compared to four gives my horse the best shot at winning here. Very close between my horse, the John Henry trained horse and Night Rider Stables entry. Good luck to all in the field.
