October 5, 2019

Career win #932 will carry extra meaning for long time trainer Mo Mentum Farm, as they have earned their first career Grade 1 win. It’s been a long time coming for him, and it is a Snakie foal, Mojave Rattler, who gets it done for him in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile. At odds of 14/1, the gelding started near the rear of the field, but was never too far from the leaders. After a great stretch run, history would be made for the trainer. Congratulations on this achievement! Aboard the winner was T Gaffalione, earning his first Shadwell trophy. The time of the win was 1:33.02, similar to other recent winning times. Let’s take a look!

(1/4 Mile- :22.89)– From the outside, Lunar Blaze goes to the lead for John Henry with Calia Stable’s Sundays Sauce right with him. These two begin the run around the first turn running about six or seven lanes over. Ardetha runs third for Aer Stables with The Jokey, from D J C Racing Stables to his outside, and due to that neither of the first two can move closer to the rail for the turn. About two lengths back On The Spot (Mb Stables) is fifth, with Name Drop (Fractious) and Going Gone (John Henry) to his outside. It’s another length and a half back to a four wide group, which has the eventual winner, Mojave Rattler on the rail for Mo Mentum Farm. Spiral (Mb Stables), Puako (Smokey Stover), and Cherra Grans (Team 7 Illusions) are to his outside. Trailing are Banshee Star (Joseph Racing), Nowhere Man (Mb Stables), and The Ego Has Landed (TwinTowersRacing).

(½ Mile- :45.61)- Midway into the backstretch, Sundays Sauce pokes a head in front of Lunar Blaze, but these two are still clear of the rest of the field by two lengths. Both Ardetha and The Joker opted not to pursue the top spot any further and are now the middle horses of a four wide group also consisting of On The Spot and Going Gone. Right behind them was Mojave Rattler, and jockey T Gaffalione seemed to be positioning and hoping for a gap to become present between On The Spot and Ardetha to shoot through as they got closer to the turn. Name Drop and Puako were to his outside. Further back, Nowhere Man was showing interest now in moving forward, and looked for an outside move.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- On the front end, both Sundays Sauce and Lunar Blaze were still running well, but their lead on the rest of the field was shrinking. For Mojave Rattler, the lane that Gaffalione as hoping for would come to fruition, and he capitalized on it during the run around the turn. At the top of the stretch, he powered through that group and was now in the fourth position. Going Gone was not going anywhere and was actually looking good at the top of the stretch as he ran third. It was very tight behind them between the comers and the goers, but it was clear that Nowhere Man was going to become a contender as his outside move continued. Also, Puako seemed to be in good form here.

(Finish- 1:33.02)- Mojave Rattler ran with great power in his stride as he stayed in his lane to move to the front. He needed too, because Nowhere Man was also running really well and while the two of them were several lanes apart, it ended up being an entertaining battle to the wire that would see one trainer pick up his first Grade 1 victory by a neck over a trainer that has 187 of them (as of press time). Third to eleventh were separated by a length or so, and its Lunar Blaze hanging for the third spot, over Puako. The rest of this cluster of horses, in order, would be, Spiral, Name Drop, Sundays Sauce, Going Gone, On The Spot, and Cherra. Two lengths behind the wall were The Ego Has Landed, Ardetha, and The Joker.

About The Winner- Mojave Rattler, trained by Mo Mentum Farm, and ridden to victory by T Gaffalione, is a three year old gelding by Snakie, and is out of Beef Hooked. He was bred as a yearling in Ontario by John Henry, and acquired by Mo Mentum Farm in late November last year via an $80.000 private sale. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his fourth in 14 starts, his second stake win, and first graded win. His career earnings are now $789.360.
