Grand Dragonville Grabs The Flower Bowl

The Flower Bowl (BC) (Grade 1)- $500.000 Purse
BEL- For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
One Mile and One Quarter on the Inner Turf
October 6, 2019

Everyone wants to go into the BC hot. For Smokey Stover and Grand Dragonville, that form could not be any better as she will be going into the BC Fillies and Mares Turf on a three race winning streak. After feasting on The Flower Bowl, Grand Dragonville earns the automatic spot in the BC, but she won’t just be there, she should be one of the favorites. Against a strong field and with the great F Pennington aboard, the filly by Grandeur came from behind to get up in time for the victory. It is the first win in the race for both trainer and jockey. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:59.17, a couple tenths slower then last year’s, but all that was needed. Let’s take a look at it!

(½ Mile- :47.29)- Nebulae Z explodes out of the starting gate for Team 7 Illusions, and for a moment it seemed as though she was going to jump out to a big lead, but would eventually be restrained. While that happened, Sketch The Way came on strongly on the outside for Williams9 while rounding the turn and it would be her taking over the lead. She would being Cest And Me, from D J C Racing Stables along with her, and these three would be the early frontrunners. Festive, from Mb Stables, assumed a stalking position behind them. Going back another length and a half, we had a three wide group consisting of Light The Fuse (Diablo Diablo), Easier Said (Mb Stables), and Z Fan (Nakamura Stables). After two more lengths, there was another three wide group, and the eventual winner from Smokey Stover, Grand Dragonville, was on the outside. To her inside was Investment Return (Grimley) and Burnkk (Night Rider Stables). Trailing are Nancy Broom Moytoy (Team 7 Illusions) and The Universe (Chili King Stables).

(3/4 Mile- 1:10.63)- This portion of the race does not see much changeover. The leaders are still Sketch The Way and Cest And Me. Festive moved up a bit to run with Nebulae Z, but that was about it. Further back in the field, Grand Dragonville still ran in the third lane and ran in the eighth position, trailing by about five lengths.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- At the top of the turn, Nebulae Z threw in the towel, but the other frontrunners still ran at the front for now. Change seemed imminent as the stretch run began, however, with an outside push from Z Fan looking strong as she moved four wide and was about a length behind. Meanwhile, Grand Dragonville was making a run while in the money lane, and was moving to within a half length of Z Fan. Easier Said and Light The Fuse were turning up the heat as well, but did not have as clear of a lane as the horses on the outside. Nancy Broom Moytoy was getting closer, but had a lot of ground to cover.

(Finish- 1:59.17)- With a furlong to go, they were six wide for the race lead, and another close HRP finish was in the works. Nancy Broom Moytoy was continued her advance, as well. In the last furlong, Grand Dragonville was that much better then everyone else that was even with her to be able to win while pulling away from a length. Look out for her in the BC! Cest and Me wins the second place headbob to complete our successful picking of the exacta in the preview! Easier Said is third with Sketch The Way holding on pretty well to finish fourth. Light The Fuse, Z Fan, and Festive were all close by as well. Nancy Broom Moytoy seemed destined for a better run in the stretch then her eventual eighth place finish. Rounding out the order are Investment Return, The Universe, Burnkk, and Nebulae Z.

About The Winner- Grand Dragonville, trained by Smokey Stover, and ridden to victory by F Pennington is a three year old filly by Grandeur and is out of Dragonville. She was bred in Florida as a second quarter two year old by the trainer, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her seventh in 14 starts, her fifth stake win, third graded win, and her first Grade 1. Her career earnings are now $1,006.800.
