Forgotten Past: The Story of the Doubledogdare Present

Doubledogdare Stakes (Grade 3)- $100.000 Purse
KEE- For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Upward
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
April 20, 2018

Coming into the race at odds of 9/1, there were quite a few people who had forgotten the past of Forgotten Past, a talented filly by Son Of Laggy, running for Mb Stables. The highlight of her career came last fall, when she won the Grade 1 Zenyatta, but the time had come for her to come up with another big win. The $100.000 Doubledogdare, a Grade 3, won’t be the biggest stake on one’s resume, but a great effort here provided a reminder that she is a former Grade 1 winner. Blackberry was making a late run on her, but at the top of the stretch, Forgotten Past responded well to the challenge and picked up the win for Mb Stables. It’s his first win in the stake, and the second for jockey J R Leparoux, who won in 2016 with Don’t Freak Out. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:41.78, making it the third quickest running of the stake. Let’s take a look!

(1/4 Mile- :23.57)- Breaking quickly out of the gate would be Had Some Drinks, for Mb Stables, clearing the field by a length and a half prior to entering the first turn. Running behind her at this point was the post-time favorite, Fancy Five, from Nakamura Stables and Lucifers Wings, from Paradise Stable. They ran side by side, with Our Athletes’ Blackberry running behind them. Getting off to an interesting start would be our eventual winner, Forgotten Past, as initially she seemed slow out of the gate for Mb Stables, and seemed as though she would assume a position near the back. At one point, she dropped four and a half lengths behind her stablemate. But as they moved into the first turn, she made a concerted effort to advance her position, and did it while running four wide. At a quarter, she was fifth, but moving up. In the middle of the field, running together were Heart Nebulae (SamIam) and Steady Red Hoofed (Estero Farms). Kinda Naughty (Savage Racing Stable) and All Fueled Up (Axeman) ran at the back.

(½ Mile- :47.26)- Had Some Drinks continued to run well at the front, and opened up her lead to over two lengths in the backstretch. The big mover here was Forgotten Past, who continued her advancement to the front. By the time they reached the half mile, she had taken over the second position, and was less then two lengths out. Steady Red Hoofed seemed to like what Forgotten Past was doing, and made her own advance at this point, moving into third, and looking pretty good herself. After a length, Blackberry ran three wide, to the outside of Fancy Five and Lucifers Wings, and was about five lengths back. All Fueled Up and Kinda Naughty continued to trail.

(Top Of Stretch- 1.5F To Go)- Things are looking good for Mb Stables as the field makes their way into the homestretch. Had Some Drinks still looks to be in good stride, and is not letting up, and the only one that has caught her to this point is Forgotten Past. That one is now within a length, and poised to take the baton from her stablemate. Lurking from behind would be Blackberry, who was steadily making progress in the third lane. She was now just two and a half lengths from the front. Steady Red Hoofed, who was looking like she would be a contender, was unable to measure up as they moved around the turn. Time was running out for one of the others to make some noise, and none of them appeared to be about to do so.

(Finish- 1:41.78)- Had Some Drinks would have some fight in her about halfway in the stretch, before bowing out and settling for the third position. Forgotten Past would be terrific at this point, and when J R Leparoux heard the charge of Blackberry coming on the outside, he asked for more out of Forgotten Past, and she would deliver. It would be just enough to hold off Blackberry at the wire. As far as Blackberry is concerned, she did everything right in the stretch, and made a strong run. A little more race track, and this race may have been hers. Her situation was similar to Forgotten Past in that they needed a big win, and she’ll settle for the big result. After third place Had Some Drinks, Lucifers Wings ends up being the best of the rest, finishing fourth. Rounding out the finishing order would be Fancy Five, Kinda Naughty, Steady Red Hoofed, All Fueled Up, and Heart Nebulae, all of whom were non factors.

About The Winner: Forgotten Past, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by J R Leparoux, is a four year old filly by Son Of Laggy, and is out of Darjina. She was bred in Florida by Mb Stables as a second quarter two year old, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her fifth in 13 starts, her third stake win, and second graded win. Her career earnings are now $615.350.
