Stakes Record-1:42.38 (Greta-2021)

Well, this is a new experience for your author.  After breaking her maiden by four lengths in sharp time on October 3 at SA, Greta had the look of something special.  That victory was accomplished over four rivals, but it was visually impressive.  In Sunday’s $200.000 Rags to Riches, Greta took a little bit longer to get the 8.5 furlongs than she did in the maiden-breaker, but when she crossed the wire a length in front of Swiss Skydiver, the 1:42.38 she put up was good enough to establish a new stakes record.

Breaking from post three, Greta was allowed to settle in the two path about two lengths off of Permanent Vacation as the latter established the pace.  Getting the quarter in :23.59, Permanent Vacation held almost a three length advantage over the eventual winner who was racing in tandem with Verve.  After the half-mile went in :47.23, Greta started to inch a bit closer to the leader from the two-path while Verve raced with her from the four path.

At the top of the lane, Permanent Vacation’s lead was just a length.  Greta was moving well, but there would be no four length romp this time: she was going to be challenged.  She reached the front with less than a furlong remaining, but Verve was almost on even terms with her (but still widest of all) and the duo of Cb Lady and Swiss Skydiver were finding their best stride as well.  For a moment, her trainer thought she might hold for third and your author patted himself on the back for picking against her; however, Greta gradually inched clear to score by almost a full length over Swiss Skydiver who just got by a tough-luck Verve for the place.  Cb Lady was right there at the wire as well and was followed across the line by Wicked Ways, Rosalind, and Permanent Vacation.

Greta (Established o/o Fire Opal) now has two wins from four starts with earnings of $169.080.  She will most likely race once more (G1 Starlet/G2 Golden Rod/G3 Mazarine BC) before the end of her juvenile campaign, but there is a slight chance she waits for the calendar to turn before reappearing.  Good luck going forward to all of the participants in the 2021 edition of the $200.000 Rags To Riches at CD.
