Gumshoe Wins BC Juvenile

BC Juvenile (Grade 1)- $2,000.000 Purse
DMR- For Colts and Geldings Two Years Old
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
November 4, 2017

He was better in the stretch in this time. Much, much better. They were coming at Gumshoe from both sides, but the colt form EasyMoney Stables showed plenty of heart and desire to hold off the likes of Centerpiece, and even his stablemate, Subutai. His odds of 16/1 were more a case of bettors looking other ways before the race, instead of being down on him. With all the talent in a race like this, especially in the Juvenile division, you never know who is going to step up. Today, it was Gumshoe, and now EasyMoney hopes to break the trend of Juvenile winners being jinxed for the KYD. Congratulations to the trainer, and to the jockey, K J Desormeaux, who won the race for the third time, making himself the winnigest jockey for the race. Those who didn’t win today can take solace in knowing that several KYD winners have been also-rans in the Juvenile. For now, let’s take a look at this Juvenile, run in a time of 1:42.08 with no room for error at the wire!

(1/4 Mile- :23.12)- The eventual winner, Gumshoe breaks very well out of the gate for EasyMoney Stables but did not quite enjoy the outside push that was seen from others in the field. Both Erupt (D J C Racing Stables) and Table Stakes (Barcelona Farms) were strong from their outside positions, but could not move over to the rail for the opening turn quickly because of the presence Psychotic Ruler (D J C Racing Stables). Eventually, these three cross over, but it would be midway into the turn. Centerpiece (Mb Stables) also broke well, but did not quite challenge the pace setters, and eventually he’d be right beside Gumshoe even at this portion of the race. Edge Of Chai (Mb Stables) and Mistress Seeker (Aer Stables) were with these two as well, and about three lengths from the lead. It was another length to What Have You Done (Mb Stables) in 8th, and a half length to the 9th place Point Of Reality (D J C Racing Stables). Another length to Candy Fusion (Double Cross Ranch) and Wicked Orange (Allinthegate), while the other three were well back. Along For The Ride (Fractious) and Subutai (EasyMoney Stables) were looking to make closing bids, while Sweeping Italy (Drabfantasy) may have simply not have been ready to run, having raced six days prior.

(½ Mile- :46.49)- For the most part, the field maintained their positions as this quick half mile fraction gets set. Erupt leads Table Stakes by a neck running down the backstretch, but Psychotic Ruler begins to drop back. Battling fourth, Gumshoe and Centerpiece are still stuck together, side by side for this position, not letting the other get away from them. Mistress Seeker wants to run harder towards the end of the backstretch, but has tight quarters in which to maneuver and is held up a bit. Wicked Orange looked like he was going to make a move in the backstretch, but then seemed to think better of it. Everyone else seemed to be waiting for their time to strike.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- At the top of the stretch, there were seven of them within a length of one another. Table Stakes was looking a little more capable then Erupt at this point in holding on to the lead all the wire, but they were coming at him hard. Psychotic Ruler was looking to get back involved by running between Erupt and Table Stakes, but he could not could pull even with them. On the outside, Gumshoe and Centerpiece are still going at one another side by side, though Gumshoe has a very valuable advantage on him by about a length. In the middle lanes of all this fun, we have both Edge Of Chai and Mistress Seeker, who each have a great shot at well as they run to the inside of Gumshoe. We also see here an aggressive move to the outside by What Have You Done, who is going about eight wide. Point Of Royalty was showing a desire to get closer, but did not have the room. Candy Fusion ran calmly on the rail, while Wicked Orange was coming up flat. The only one making a move forward that had been at the very back would be Subutai, who had cut the gap to three and a half, but he still had a lot of horses to actually pass. Along For The Ride’s name was appropriate at this point, and Sweeping Italy was well back.

(Finish- 1:42.08)- With so many in it with a chance to win late, the runs by Centerpiece and Gumshoe seem a little more impressive as they start to pull away from the rest of the field midway through the stretch. Centerpiece could never pull even with Gumshoe though, meaning that Gumshoe had to show a high level of heart and desire to pull out the win. Charging hard late was the winning trainer’s stablemate, Subutai, who seized the lane that the two had vacated and put forth a good late bid. With another half furlong, he could have made things interesting for Gumshoe, but will settle for third here. The wide trip of What Have You Done got him a fourth place check. Table Stakes showed heart too, I thought, despite finishing 5th, nipping Mistress Seeker, with Edge Of Chai right there, too. Psychotic Ruler slipped to 7th, a spot ahead of Candy Fusion, who lacked stretch response. Point Of Royality may just needed a little more luck. Erupt and Along For The Ride were not necessarily beaten badly, either. Wicked Orange had nothing, and Sweeping Italy was gassed.
