Inside Runners Look Best in The Maid Of The Mist

The Maid Of The Mist- $150.000 Purse
BEL- For Fillies Two Year Old Foaled In NY
One Mile on the Dirt
October 24, 2020

Saturday will be the 13th running of The Maid Of The Mist, a one mile long race for two year old New York-bred females on the main track. The race did initially debut in 2004, but took a few years off between 2009 and 2014. Like the other NY-bred races being run here, the purse has seen a reduction, but here it was a cut of $100.000 from the $250.000 it ran for in the one-off race at AQU last year. The winner of that race was Commanding Chai, the last stake that she would win, and she has since been retired. Let’s look at this field!

Top Picks:
#1- Maresfield- This Ginger Haggis filly is coming off a second place performance in the $100.000 Gimma, a similar race that is a furlong shorter. It will only be to her liking that this race is at an even mile. I would have preferred to have seen a more recent public work, but am confident that she can get it done here.

#4- Amalfi- She is also coming out of the Gimma, and ran fifth in the race. That said, she was also within a length of the winner, which means she was closer to Maresfield then the finishing positions by themselves may lead one to believe. She has two wins and four in the money finishes in five races, so is reliable to be a top pick.

#2- Just My Imagination- She is two for four in her career thus far, and is actually perfect on a dry track. Her August allowance win at SAR, at seven furlongs, was impressive, and elevated her into the Grade 3 Pocahontas, where she was fourth. She will be right there with the above two.

Good Shot:
#3- Firenze G- Was a $100.000 private sales purchase by Mb Stables on the last day of August, and she won her debut with the trainer a couple weeks later at SA. That would be promising, but the SRF of 81 does not impress. I know some don’t pay attention to those numbers, but that’s too low to overlook.

#6- Ms Bubblee- Broke her maiden at the beginning of September going a mile at ELP. It was the first time she was able to run long, so she was likely just waiting for that chance. The SRF of 84 is more encouraging than that of Firenze G.

#9- Lady Dreams- Favor her just a little bit more then La Becky, but neither really have me all that excited. She struggled in the Grade 3 Pocahontas in her last start, but maybe she can use the off track there (listed as good) as a bit of a pass.

Not My Picks:
#8- La Becky- Did not take well to the Miss Grillo at the beginning of the month, and based on her works, I am not giving her a pass there because it was on the turf. She looks like she should be good on the grass. Last main track start was a sprint that earned a 91 SRF. I am not fully convinced she wants this distance.

#7- True Identity- Maiden in five starts.

#5- Ku Deh- Another maiden.

Prediction: 1-4-2-3
