It Was a “Clutch” Play in This Year’s Singletary Stakes

It seems that Aer Stables Clutch is back on the rebuild after failed attempts against Graded company last season as a Juvenile. Sundays victory is now the third of his career, and his first ever Stakes victory.

  • Singletary Stakes – Purse$100.000
  • Santa Anita Park – For Three year olds
  • One mile on the turf
  • April 28th, 2019

Santa Anita has been a blessing for Clutch in his career. The three year old has two wins and a runner-up in last years $100 Zuma Beach. Quick to take to the front in this event, he would never really feel the challenge from his other three competitors, winning by two lengths at the wire. He would post all the markers throughout the event with times of 25 flat, 50 flat, 1:12 and three, and closing out in a time of 1:35.56. It seems the early slower fractions put everyone to bed and gave Clutch all the energy he would need to race outward with faster closing fractions down the stretch drive. Will be interesting to see where his trainer heads next.

Nakamura Stables Spanish Knowledge was close throughout this event in a stalking position, but was never able to close ground on the front runner. This was only his second attempt over the grass after a sixth place finish in the $75 Columbia Stakes, but he learned from that event coming here. Wait and see if he continues to challenge the grass.

Post time favorite Serpico ( TwinTowersRacing) was a big disappointment for his backers. He won a Clm32 event two starts ago in stellar fashion and in a real nice time over this very surface on the frontend. Possibly a change in instruction was his undoing. Would have been a different outcome if he would have pressed the pace early on in this one. Hopefully he will be back on track next time out.

The final finisher would be Just You Wait ( Mb Stables ) Its not often you don’t find one of this trainers runners out of the top three placings, and this one will need to find his placing quickly or we could see him heading to the auctions next time out. He does have nice bloodlines, so maybe maturity might bring him around.
