Joshua Stables Gets First BC Win as Beach Dandy Takes BC Juvenile

BC Juvenile – Grade I [KYD]
1 1/16 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $2,000.000 Colt & Gelding 2 Year Olds.

1st  2    Beach Dandy           Joshua Stables               Castellano J J

When i first looked at this gelding i was struck by two things, firstly his size and secondly how unstylish his breeding was and both of those things led me to think he was a bit of a freak. As he travelled in behind a nice average pace and looked to be caught in a pocket a couple of times he needed every inch of his huge frame to muscle his way out and mount a challenge. It was perfect timing in the end as he drove to the line getting first run on a couple of his closing rivals and taking the race by a neck. This was Joshua Stables first ever BC win and with a lovely conformation there is no reason that he wont develop into a TC prospect.

2nd  13  Questionable            Mb Stables               Bejarano R

Taken back from his horrible draw he closed gamely to be beaten just a neck. This great run proves that Pharoah win was no fluke and i am pretty sure he will prove to be Mb Stables best KYD prospect for years. Nicely bred, nicely made and loves a route trip i think we will be seeing plenty more of this gelding.

3rd  9    Red Cup             Our Athletes               Van Dyke D

Got right onto the speed and never gave up battling all the way to the line. He rallied so well when i thought he was beaten that i actually thought he may hold on especially as the first two were drifting across the track. In the end  he just got outfinished but was only beaten a quarter length in a very game third. Another with the breeding and conformation to train on.

4th  3  Bo Knows            Smokey Stover               Velazquez J R

The trainer had such a big day with their juveniles that i expected this one to find a gap and burst through but in a congested race he could only manage fourth a length off the winner. He has had a busy and consistent season and deserves a break now as the trainer starts to build for the TC next year.

5th   Not To Be Denied           D J C Racing Stables    Lanerie C J

Got into his preferred position but had to travel a little wide in doing so and that may have cost him in the end. He couldnt muster the finish that had seen him win his last four and ended up just whacking away in fifth just a length behind the winner.

6th   Cardinal Direction   Mb Stables                Saez L

Ran better than i expecetd getting up in behind the leaders but not finding enough to be involved.

7th   Chrystal Believer   Maxmillion Farm           Albarado R J

Led from his wide draw but couldnt keep up the gallop weakening in the end.

8th   Golden Boy            D J C Racing Stables  Gallardo A A

Got up behind them but just whacked away in the end.

9th   Scarlet Ninja                      Joshua Stables            Espinoza V
10th   Commanding Bee          Serenity Stables          Ortiz I Jr
11th   Guest Book                      Team 7 Illusions         Garcia Alan
12th   Call It A Come Back        Estero Farms             Pennington F
13th   Weak Sheik                     Mb Stables                  Lopez P
14th   Get Jiggy With It              Serenity Stables       Leparoux J R

SUMMARY

There was a few excuses in this race as there tends to be in any field of 14 at HRP as there just isnt enough track for the way the horses move. The winner used his size to get the win and any of the top four could go on to be very nice three year olds as unusually they are all made to last a lot longer than previous juveniles that have won this race.
Probably the most surprising thing about the first two was the silly odds that the HRP odds generator came up with, over 20/1 for a couple of grade one winners really makes you question the software they use.
