Keikowin Gets “Cheesy” in San Felipe Stakes

3/6/21

10    SA   San Felipe Stakes (GII)  [KYD]

             $300.000     3yo        1 1/16m Dirt           122lbs

At least we got a winner in one of these races…  Keikowin Racing’s Cheesy, sent off as the 5/1 second choice, closed relentlessly down the lane and took Saturday’s San Felipe Stakes (GII) to make it two in a row and further his pursuit of the road to Louisville.  Ricki Tikki Tavi certainly made a race out of it but ended up a length back in second.  Contradiction set the pace throughout but got a bit leg weary late, finishing third, a neck better than High Crimes in fourth.  The final running time was 1:41.32 for the mile and a sixteenth.

Cheesey is a 3yo chestnut gelding by Exullant – Amazing Andrea, by Inspector Jacques, and he was bred by his owner in Cal. This was his fourth win from nine starts, and now has a pair of graded wins on the 21 season.  His lifetime earnings now stand at $415.600.

Cheesy broke in hand, rated back to the far turn, moved forward, clearing the field late, won driving.  Ricki Tikki Tavi was forwardly placed throughout, game run to the wire.  Contradiction broke alertly, set the pace to the furlong marker, tired from there.  High Crimes chased the pace setter to mid lane, tired.  Sensei taken in hand from the gate, some late interest.  Tormented flashed early speed, no factor.  Crack Danz was never involved.  Stargazing was forwardly place to the top of the lane, tired. Seattle Sloo was outrun, passed tiring rivals late.  Counterintelligence was outrun.  Rotarian showed some early interest, tired. Violative was outrun.
