The 2015 DMR Handicap (GII) ended up being the long-shot special…  sent off as the 10/1 outsider, LionKing Stables’ Tons Of Dough sat behind a torrid pace and proved to be a very smart claim, taking this one by a length in a final time of 2:11.27.  8/1 Steel Kelp, the second longest odds on the board finished second with Carnage completing the trifecta.

Away from the gate and there was no doubt that Pure Violence wanted the lead in this one.  Caught Red Hoofed took up the chase from the rail, Tons Of Dough from the outside, Officer Outcast and Carnage side by side, Amazimum, and Steel Kelp was the early trailer.

Under the wire the first time by and now seven and a half furlongs to run, Pure Violence showing the way by six lengths.  Caught Red Hoofed a clear second, three more back to Tons Of Dough, another length to Officer Outcast with Amazimum on his outside, Carnage from between that pair and Steel Kelp was still the trailer and four wide.

Around the clubhouse turn and onto the backside with five furlongs to run, Pure Violence still showing the way by six lengths.  Caught Red Hoofed trying to stay in the same zip-code as that one, a gap of five back to Tons Of Dough, Amazimum along side that one, then three more back to Officer Outcast on the rail, Steel Kelp still staying well off of the hedge and Carnage was now the trailer, fifteen lengths covered the field.

They were now on the far turn and going past the five-sixteenths pole, Pure Violence still in front by five.  Caught Red Hoofed was now being collared by Tons Of Dough, who was now making a push.  Steel Kelp was also making a big move forward, gap of two to Officer Outcast, Amazimum, and Carnage could see them all.

To the top of the lane and nearing the furlong marker, this was now a horse race!  Pure Violence was now feeling Tons Of Dough at his neck.  Steel Kelp was flying forward fast… the field had eight lengths separating them and this was anyone’s race to win.

Now inside the final 150-yards and to the wire, Tons Of Dough went right on by Pure Violence, and now Steel Kelp was flying down the center of the course… nobody else seemed to have the will, and it was a two-horse race to the wire. Tons Of Dough with the lead, Steel Kelp not able to find more and as they went under the wire it was all Tons Of Dough, taking the victory by a length and a half.  Steel Kelp a clear second, with Carnage four lengths back in third.  Pure Violence tired to be fourth, Officer Outcast in fifth, Caught Red Hoofed in sixth and Amazimum closed this one out.

Tons Of Dough is a 5yo grey gelding by Tons Of Time – Putt For Dough, by HRP-Netherwood, and he was bred in LA by Pan Farms.  Acquired by claim in his previous race for $45.000, this was his twelfth win from thirty starts and he now has earnings of $244.92, with the bulk of that coming from this race… a masterful job of training by LionKing Stables!
