Matey Takes Her Turn in Coronation Cup

Coronation Cup – Grade III
5 1/2 Furlongs Turf Stake Purse $175.000 Filly 3 Year Olds.

1st Matey Red Fox Farms Lezcano J

Well, I think I said it all in the write up for this race and all I can say is today’s winner was Matey. In fairness on its own without the tangle of form these fillies shared this was a solid win, coming from off the pace she got home by a half-length. This win backs up her Georgian Bay win last time, and she has now won three of her last four so we can safely assume she has found some improvement. I can’t vouch for the next sprint these fillies meet in but for now she is top of the pile.

2nd Piatt Royalty Stables Velazquez J R

After closing from last in her last start she turned into a front runner today and though she was never left alone battled on pretty bravely for a close second. Whether this was the effect of the gaming buttons or an AI decision only the trainer will know but she had led before when second in the Soaring Softly and did an equally good job today. No doubt this form will change again before the end of the season, but she remains a force in these filly’s sprints, and this was a good effort.

3rd Blue Velvet First Flight Stable Buick W T

Stalked the leader the whole way and was part of a three-way battle for the lead but in the end just didn’t have the finish left in her legs to get her home. A decent effort but once again she has run well at a different trip and on a different surface so it remains to be seen which conditions will bring about a win in this type of grade.

4th People Easer Mb Stables Franco M

With three of the eight runners the trainer will be frustrated to only get one in the first four but there was very little from top to bottom and one feels this tangle of form among these three-year-old sprinting fillies has a few more twists and turns yet. Caught up in the three-way battle for the lead she held the rail which I thought would be the winning of this race but in the end her stamina gave way, and she had to settle for a close fourth.
