There’s a new master at the PID Masters Stakes. That would be Maxmillion Farm, the trainer of the winning horse, Thalassa, in what was the tenth time that this stake has been run. Prior to this race, Mb Stables had won four in a row, and it is very possible that a game-record would have been set if he got his fifth as I know I have never seen a streak bigger then four. Maxmillion has been a nemesis on the track often for Mb Stables, so perhaps he is the perfect trainer to be snapping the streak! Maxmillion was also the last trainer to win this race before Mb, doing so in 2014 with Hehehe. Jockey E Esquivel is a first time winner of the race, which was won in a time of 1:15.43. Let’s take a look at it!

(1/4 Mile- :23.64)- Red Broom would be the quickest out of the gate for her trainer, John Herny, but she would be joined at the front at the quarter mark by out eventual winner, Maxmillion Farm’s Thalassa. Right behind them in a stalking position was British Chai, out of Mo Mentum, and these three pulled away from the a very tight pack behind them. It was five wide for fourth, and from inside to outside this consisted of Indian River Queen (South Beach Racing), Blazin By (Mb Stables), Seydoux (Smokey Stover), On The Flop (Team 7 Illusions), and Sneaky Opus (Smokey Stover). It’d be one more length to the post time favorite, You Just Have 2 Wait (Estero Farms). Down And Out (Mb Stables) was the trailer as five and a half lengths separated first from last early on.

(½ Mile- :46.40)- Thalassa emphatically put away Red Broom towards the end of the backstretch, picking up the pace of the race. She was ready to leave the rest of the field in her dust, too, as midway through the turn, the lead was now two and a half lengths. Red Broom was now running with British Chai, as that one did not look to push forward when Thalassa advanced. Moving up to fourth would be Sneaky Opus, making the most of being in the money lane at the top of the turn. On The Flop was staying with her for now. Indian River Queen held ground on the rail, while Seydoux and Blazin By dropped back a bit and now ran with You Just Have 2 Wait. Down And Out still trailed.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Thalassa completed the turn in impressive form, and you had to think at this point that she had gotten away from everyone. However, there still would be challengers, and the run of Sneaky Opus saw her make headway on the outside, while British Chai was looking good on the rail. Red Broom was dropping back, and On The Flop could not continue to keep pace with Sneaky Opus. Indian River Queen came down off the rail, and Seydoux was showing interest. Others had a lot of work to do, and needed to get started.

(Finish- 1:15.43)- With a furlong to go, Thalassa had a two length lead, and was looking pretty comfortable, but she did start to show some signs of tiring as the wire got closer. Fortunately for her, she had plenty of daylight on the rest of the field, and she would still win by a length over what would be a photo finish for second. That position goes to Sneaky Opus, getting the headbob and British Chai. Seydoux ran well late and gets her a fourth place check, half a length ahead of On The Flop. The final finishing order would be: Indian River Queen, Red Broom, Down And Out, You Just Have 2 Wait, and Blazin By.

About the Winner- Thalassa, trained by Maxmillion Farm, and ridden to victory by E Esquivel, is a four year old filly by Greek God, and is out of Thirlling Baby. She was bred in Kentucky by Our Athletes as a yearling, and acquired by Maxmillion Farm, via First Class Stable, in private sales in January 2018 for just $20.000. The win is her fourth in 21 starts and her second stake win, each of which are graded. Her career earnings are now $547.730.
