McWicked Looks Ready to Strike in The Arlington Stakes

The Arlington Stakes will be run on May 30, 2026, at Churchill Downs as a Grade III turf stake for four-year-olds and upward going 1 1/16 miles for a purse of $275.00. Formerly run at Arlington Park over longer turf distances, the race has shifted to Churchill Downs in recent years, with Operation Mongoose winning the 2025 edition in 1:38.81. This year’s field brings together several sharp turf routers, including multiple recent winners and an experienced Grade III winner in Kidding.

1. Off The Horizon

Trainer/Owner: Nakamura Stables
Probable Jockey: Bejarano R
Odds: 4/1

Off The Horizon brings a solid turf foundation into this spot for Nakamura Stables. He has won five of fifteen turf starts and owns six wins overall from eighteen lifetime races, with earnings of $315.280. His 2026 form is strong, with two wins from three starts, though his latest effort at Santa Anita saw him set or attend the pace before finishing fourth in a one-mile allowance. He has enough tactical speed to be involved early and enough route experience to stay the trip, but he may need to finish stronger than he did last time to beat this group.

2. Darrow

Trainer/Owner: Mb Stables
Probable Jockey: Velazquez J R
Odds: 7/2

Darrow enters for Mb Stables with a sharp recent win at Turf Paradise, where he pressed close, took control, and finished the job at one mile on firm turf. He has won seven of sixteen lifetime starts and six of thirteen on turf, with earnings of $848.98. His 2026 record is excellent, showing two wins and one third from three starts. With Velazquez J R named, Darrow has the profile of a serious win threat, especially if he can sit close without being forced into a duel.

3. Prince Mbilini

Trainer/Owner: Winning Link Stables
Probable Jockey: Curtis B
Odds: 6/1

Prince Mbilini is a veteran turf runner with eight wins from twenty-six starts and a strong long-distance profile, having won eight of twenty long races. He comes off a front-running turf win at Turf Paradise and has eight wins from twenty-three turf starts. His earnings stand at $190.94. The concern is class, as his recent win came in optional claiming company, but his current form is good, and he has enough early speed to shape the pace.

4. McWicked

Trainer/Owner: Mb Stables
Probable Jockey: Lopez P
Odds: 3/1

McWicked looks like the projected winner. He has won six of twelve lifetime starts and four of seven on turf, with earnings of $712.84. His recent form is excellent, including a win at Keeneland on April 24 and a prior Grade III win in the Commonwealth Turf at Churchill Downs last November. He has already proven he can handle this course and this type of company, and his tactical running style gives Lopez P options. He does not need the lead, but he can stay close enough to avoid leaving himself too much to do.

5. Kidding

Trainer/Owner: High Voltage
Probable Jockey: Lezcano J
Odds: 5/2

Kidding is the most accomplished runner in the field by volume, with fifty-one lifetime starts, eleven wins, fourteen seconds, and eight thirds. He has earned $1,036.09 and enters off a Grade III win in the Fort Marcy at Aqueduct. His turf record is outstanding, with eleven wins and fourteen seconds from forty-seven starts. The eight-year-old remains highly competitive and may be the horse to beat on raw class, but this shorter Churchill configuration may favor a sharper tactical type like McWicked if the pace is honest.

Pace Structure and Race Outlook

Prince Mbilini, Off The Horizon, Darrow, and possibly Kidding all have enough tactical speed to be part of the first flight. Prince Mbilini is the most likely to press the issue early, while Darrow and McWicked project to sit in close attendance. Kidding should be able to stay within striking range without needing to force the pace.

The key race shape favors a horse who can sit just behind the early leaders and produce a controlled move turning for home. McWicked fits that profile best. He owns proven Churchill Downs turf form, recent winning form, and enough class to handle the Grade III level.

Projected Winner

Top Selection: McWicked
Main Danger: Kidding
Best Value: Off The Horizon
Live Longshot: Prince Mbilini
