Need 4 Speed Makes This the “Longshot Lexington”

4/10/21

1  KEE      Coolmore Lexington (GIII) [KYD]

     $200.000        3yo           1 1/16th  Dirt         120lbs

The Lexington (GIII) offered a “last chance” to gain points for the KYD… the sloppy going made that an interesting prospect and the tote-board showed why.  Kingelleinc sent out Need 4 Speed (third choice on the Green Card) and the public seemed to ignore that one, going off at 31/1 odds… bad choice… the rags-to-riches story continues as the gelding, recently claimed for just $6.250, tracked the pace and got home in front by a length in a final time of 1:442 for the mile and a sixteenth prep.  Dutty John Crow, another long shot, sent off at 21/1 odds, pressed the pace to the lane, had the lead, but couldn’t hold on in this one, taking the place.  Baller Alert set the pace to the far turn and continued on well to be third, nosing out Sunset Limited in fourth.

Need 4 Speed is a 3yo bay gelded son of Rumble – Gropey Pinball, by Cherokee Sunset, and he was bred in Cal by Team 7 Illusions.  Once claimed for $3.200, and acquired by his current connections when tagged for $6.250, the winner now shows five victories from seven starts and has lifetime earnings of $169.680.

Need 4 Speed just in behind early pace, moved up on the turn, engaged at the sixteenth pole 3p, kicked on, won driving.  Dutty John Crow away well, tracked the pace to the far turn, up to take over to the sixteenth pole, ceded. Baller Alert sent from the gate, set the pace to the far turn, headed, continued on well while no threat to the top pair. Sunset Limited early speed from the rail, settled back off of the pace from the rail, lost some ground through the far turn, evenly late. Seattle Sloo taken back off of the pace, wide trip, best foot too late.  Walk The Moon raced evenly throughout, no excuse.  Pocantico taken back off of the pace, trailed, some late interest.  Fairly Lucky broke well, showed interest for six furlongs, tired.  The Captain was outrun.  World Appeal slow start, never involved.  Archduke Charles midpack early while saving ground, tired.  Familiar Moon outrun.
