No Clear Favorite in The Hudson

The Hudson- $125.000 Purse
BEL- For Three Year Olds and Upward Foaled in NY
Six and a Half Furlongs on the Dirt
October 24, 2020

Statebred racing is the story of the day at BEL as many opportunities are present on the racing card for New Yorkers to race amongst themselves. The Hudson is designed for older sprinters, and has been running since 2004. Last year, this race was run at AQU due to construction beginning at the amazing hockey facility (among other things) being built next to BEL, but with that having come a long way, we are back at BEL. The purse has never been high for the race, but is a drop from the $150.000 of last year. Let’s take a quick look.

Top Picks:
#4- Rising King- This king has indeed been rising, hitting the board in five out of six races. His last two races have been strong, and now he moves up to this level. There are no clear favorites in this field, so I like the horse that is advancing in his career rather than being stagnant, and he fits the bill. The main question is can he convert from turf to dirt, but I am confident that he will.

#6- Cliffs of Dover- A horse that’s moving up in class and is coming off a great race at five and a half furlongs in an optional claimer. Seems to be getting better, and has earned this chance to run at this level, and with no clear favorite here, he may get the job done.

#7- Interdesign- Comes into the race off a win in the NY Stallion Series- Times Square, so if he can build on that, he could be great here. I don’t know how much I can trust him though as it took a long time to break his maiden and move up into this level.

In the Mix:
#1- Gettysburg- Has to be able to put his last race, the Grade 2 Phoenix, behind him. The good news is that he has been inconsistent for his career, but does not have two bad races in a row, so he may bounce back here.

#3- Deliberation- Veteran of 35 races who has been racing at a mile or longer for over a year. Typically, he is a pace setter in those races, so perhaps a shorter distance will help him, but I see him as a little risky to pick in this field.

#9- Di Bug- Another long-time veteran that has done great things in his career, but none of them are in 2020, as he is winless in eight starts. He is dropping down from graded company into this race, and this gives him a good chance to get back to form, something that he really needs.

Not my choice:
#2- Iguacu Falls- After winning an optional claimer at SAR, he has been 7th of 9 and 11th of 12 in two Grade 3’s with SRF’s in the lower 90’s that is not going to get it done. He works well, and is capable of a breakthrough at any time, but not a horse I can pick.

#5- Stolen- Both of D J C’s horses end up in this section, and it is hard to bet against a trainer that does so well with NY-breds, in general. Stolen is simply a horse, to me, that has not been able to elevate his career from overnights to stakes. This is the type of field that could see a change in that fortune, but I can’t get excited.

#8- Keanu Storm- Won the NY Stallion Series- Bid In June, but since then, he has not been beating much of anyone with finishes of 9th out of 10, 4th out of 6, 8th out 9, and 7th out of 12. That sees him leave the turf, and the hope will be the surface change does the trick.

Prediction: 4-6-7-1
