SUN Stakes 1 1/8 on Dirt
Purse $200.000 For Three Year Olds And Upward
Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino
Sunland Park, NM
Hurricane Ridge from The Sidley Stud broke well, took the lead out of the gate on Easter Sunday and never looked back while going wire-to-wire to win the SUN Stakes. This marks win number six from twenty-four lifetime starts for the five year old gelding. Congrats to the winning connections of our top selection and the easy public choice. Freaky Obra Party also from The Sidley Stud surged late to get up for second place to give the barn the exacta and add to their spoils. Big effort here from a horse writing his own storybook since the tiny auction price paid in December. Merky One from Night Rider Stables is another good story unfolding here and he just missed second place in another solid effort since the $20.000 claim back in August. Tuff Gong from Winning Link Stables took a decent amount of money late at the windows and ran a decent race. He showed good speed the whole way and finished well enough to hold down fourth place.
Of the rest:
Frenchman from Threshold was looking to rebound in this spot but simply succumbed to all but one in this small field and at this point looks like a horse very much on the down escalator. I am expecting a significant drop in class or a layoff as the next move with him.
Licit from DJC Racing Stables went off at a monster price, then broke in front of one horse and quickly dropped back soon afterwards to last and never made a move. He looks off of his game and probably in need of a layoff.
