Quarter Plan By a Nose in Sullivan Stakes

4/26/2020

7 GG   Sullivan Stakes

  $100.000    3yo Foaled in CA   1m    Turf    122lbs

My pitiful handicapping attempt fall flat again.  Quarter Plan, owned and trained by Gdp Inc, sat just behind the early pace, wore them down through the lane and just got a nose in front when it counted, winning the Sullivan Stakes at GG in a final time of 1:33.75 for the flat mile distance, on a turf course labeled fast.  Mojo Phooey, sent off as the .55/1 favorite controlled the pace until it counted, getting nailed on the wire and
settling for the place.

The field got away from the starting gate with Mojo Phooey on the early gas, Quarter Plan to his inside, Drumbeats along the hedge and Grinderswitch the early trailer.

Around the clubhouse turn and onto the backside with five furlongs to run and Mojo Phooey had extended the lead to two lengths.  Drumbeats along the rail, Quarter Plan on his outside and Grinderswitch continued to trail.

The field made their way down the backside and were now midway on the far turn with Mojo Phooey continuing to show the way by two and a half lengths.  Quarter Plan on the outside of Drumbeats, and Grinderswitch could still see them all.

Into the lane and past the furlong maker, Mojo Phooey in front by a length, Quarter Plan closing in a bit and moving forward with each stride, Drumbeats still with inside position and now Grinderswitch was inching forward.

Deep stretch and to the wire, Quarter Plan now had company as Mojoy Phooey was looking him square in the eye, the other were battling for the minor money and as they hit the wire it was too close to call and the PHOTO light was lit on the infield tote board.  After viewing the instant video replay, the stewards saw Quarter Plan by a nose had taken the win.  Mojo Phooey had to settle for second a length in front of Grinderswitch, with that one just a whisker in front of Drumbeats.

Quarter Plan is a 3yo bay colt by Strategic Command – Di Quatri, by Di Medici, and he was bred by his owner, Gdp Inc, in Cal.  This was his second win, first stakes, from his four starts and he now has earnings of $92.400.

Quarter Plan broke well, sat just behind the pace, moved up around the turn and into the lane, coming to even terms with the leader inside the furlong marker, all out to nail the win. Mojo Phooey away quickly from the gate, led to deep stretch, nosed on the wire. Grinderswitch trailed to the top of the lane, some late foot while no threat to the top pair. Drumbeats tracked the leader, no late push.
