Raid Of The Mist Splashes to Grey Stakes Win

Grey Stakes (Grade 3)- $125.000 Purse
WO- For Two Year Olds
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
October 27, 2019

A weather system moved across the northeast part of the US as well as Eastern Canada, leaving WO sloppy for the Grey Stakes on Sunday. This led to the scratch of one horse, that being Sars, but still left us with nine going to the gate. One the bigger longshots in the field would be Raid Of The Mist, who went off at odds of 29/1 despite being among our picks for the race. It was a surprise to see him at such a large price, and those who supported him are certainly not going to complain about it! Raid Of The Mist is trained by Allinthegate, and the trainer wins this stake for the first time. It is the second win in the race for jockey Alan Garcia, who was also aboard 2017 winner Mistress Seeker. Congratulations to the them! The time of the win in the slop was 1:47.28. Here’s a look at it!

(1/4 Mile- :25.24)- Trapper Bay was the quickest out of the gate for Gdp Inc, but he would relinquish the lead to the post time favorite and our pick, Night Rider Stables-trained Notorious Temper just as they entered the turn. Notorious Temper would pull away by a little more then a length after a quarter mile. Personal Injury was third, running to the inside of Trapper Bay for Estero Farms. Socrates, from Mb Stables, was in the fourth lane, with both Cairn Toul (The Sidley Stud) and the maiden, Gleneagles (Njvets) to his inside. Our eventual winner, Raid Of The Mist, ran seventh early for Allinthegate, and was just under four lengths from the front. The trailers are Anoush Command (Serenity Stables) and County Medical (Crocker Ggs).

(½ Mile- :50.35)- Notorious Temper is running by himself on the front end now, with a two length advantage over Socrates, who was able to move into the second lane. Personal Injury maintained a smart trip early, and was third on the rail. These three pulled away from the rest of the field, and it got jammed up a bit four lengths from the front as both Trapper Bay and Gleneagles retreated further off the pace. They were now part of a four wide group that also consisted of the advancing Anoush Command and Cairn Toul. Raid Of The Mist was a length further back, now six from the front, and County Medical trailed.

(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- The pace began to collapse on the front end pretty shortly after the field entered the turn. Notorious Temper was still the leader, but the two length lead he had built up had evaporated, and it was clear that he was about to become a beaten favorite. Within the turn, Anoush Command continued to advance in an emphatic manner, and took over the second spot at the top of the stretch while continuing to run in the fourth lane. Socrates was also making his move and pulled to the outside of Notorious Temper, and he was bringing Cairn Toul with him. Trapper Bay was moving forward again while Personal Injury was lacking response. Meanwhile, Alan Garcia put Raid Of The Mist into motion at the top of the turn, and it would be he that was the quickest of them all in the turn. The distance to the front continued to decrease, but more importantly, he was gaining on other key rivals. He had to go six wide in the stretch, however, so it was still not going to be easy. County Medical was not making a push, and Gleneagles was already eight lengths from the lead.

(Finish- 1:47.28)- Early in the stretch, Raid Of The Mist continued to advance, but Anoush Command was looking like a particularly formidable foe. However, that one seemed to lose a little of his spark, and instead it became Cairn Toul as a the biggest threat to Raid Of The Mist. The final moments of the stretch run would be an entertaining three horse battle, but in the money lane, Raid Of The Mist would get up just in time to get the win over second place Cairn Toul. Anoush Command hung with them for third, topping Trapper Bay for that spot. Notorious Temper tired to finish without a piece of the purse. County Medical, Socrates, and Personal Injury were next. Gleneagles becomes the next example of a maiden failing in a stake, beaten 17 lengths.

About The Winner- Raid Of The Mist, trained by Allinthegate and ridden to victory by Alan Garcia, is a two year old colt by Niagra and is out of Takeover. It’s the second year in a row that a Niagra foal has won the race. He was bred in California by Team 7 Illusions as a yearling, and was acquired by Allinthegate unraced in private sales in October 2018 for $150.000. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his second in five starts, and his first stake win. His career earnings are now $154.800.
