Prince of Wales Stakes
$400.00 For Three Year Olds Foaled in Canada – 1 3/16 Miles – Dirt
Fort Erie – September 7, 2026
There are technically no match races in the world of HRP but with five horses and two owners comprising the totality of the field for the Prince of Wales Stakes we are as close to match racing as we can get. $400.00 purse only tempted two owners? I admit I don’t hone in on Canadian bred racing but this seems to point to an opportunity out there for anyone with or purchasing a farm north of the border.
1. Pancake Warrior (Mb Stables/J. Lezcano) He only has two starts on his resume with a win in his last race which was a maiden claimer at Woodbine. He won by an open three lengths and shows up here and has a nice mile work at the end of August.
2. Mayor Of Win City (Mo Mentum Farm/K. Carmouche) The first of two entries from Mo Mentum Farm has much more experience that the rival on the rail and although he has not broken through with a stakes victory he is stakes placed with a couple of near misses including a third place finish in the G1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint last season. This race is dirt but he has shown versatility and the surface should not be an issue.
3. Potsdamer Platz (Mo Mentum Farm/M.E. Smith) Draws outside of his stablemate and he does have a stakes win on his record having won the Simcoe Stakes for Canadian bred two year olds last summer. This will be his first stakes race of 2026 but he has been in good form with two wins and two thirds in six starts. Gets a test for his three year old class today.
4. Magical Creature (Mb Stables/L. Saez) The second entry from Mb Stables was purchased for $125.00 a year ago. He was gelded and has not been off the board in seven starts since and .has never been far off having his nose in front at the wire in any effort since. He shows three wins and three seconds in six races this year and has earned being given the opportunity to take on stakes company. This seems like the perfect spot for him to dip his toe in.
5. Ecliptic (Mb Stables/I. Ortiz Jr) He has only one win in nine races but he is a consistent competitor having hit the board four other times in addition to the win. He made his stakes debut in his last race and was a fast closing third in the Plate Trial Stakes missing by a half length. That race was also restricted to Canadian breds. He gets an addition sixteenth of a mile and running style indicates that he should like the added distance.
I think the two outside horses look like they have the best recent form and best chance to prevail here. I like Magical Creature slightly better so put him ahead of Ecliptic for an Mb Stables 1-2 finish. I think the Mo Mentum pair will follow with Mayor Of Win City ahead of Potsdamer Platz.
