The Spinaway Stakes Grade 1 [BC]
7 Furlongs on Dirt
Purse $300.00 For Fillies Two Years Old
Saratoga Racecourse Saratoga Springs, New York
–Whispering Pines from Mb Stables rebounded on Saturday in dramatic fashion by winning The Spinaway Stakes, earning a spot in The Breeder’s Cup and taking home the money coming off a forgettable try in her previous stakes. Sometimes inside information is king and this was a prime example. Johnny V stuck with this gal and stayed here at Saratoga when there were other options and more cash on the line at other venues. He, the barn and apparently the betting public at the Spa knew the real score, as “Pines” went favored and won. Congrats to the winning connections! Diamond In The Sky from DJC Racing Stables continues to improve with distance and ran a game second place here as she came charging between rivals late to grab the silver medal and looks like a horse that is peeking at just the right time of year. Class Play from Delta Farms also is on the improve and stamped herself a solid contender with this group by getting the bronze medal here in another solid effort. Runningfortheroses from Aer Stables tried to go gate-to-wire but couldn’t hold them off today and had to settle for fourth place. She could not complete the hat trick and her connections must now make some hard choices on her next start, as she could be at her distance limit, too early to tell for sure.
Of The Rest;
Taxation Is Theft from TwinTowers Racing sat a good tracking trip right off the leader but was unable to muster the needed energy to keep it going today and had to settle for a dead-heat fifth place finish today.
Fast At Knight from Our Athletes got pretty far back as we expected, but the Cal-bred was moving well late and showed guts in dead-heating for fifth. It will be interesting to see where she is placed next.
McNamara from Nynl Stables was unable to take control from the rail slot and appeared to not handle the surface. It was over quickly when her speed was not able to be a weapon.
Will Name You Later from Serenity Stables was unable to build upon her solid form coming in and ran a dismal race today in comparison to her expectations. Nothing to report from the vets list, so I will assume that it was just one of those days. Let’s see where she shows up next.
Big Tipper, also from TwinTowers Racing was in a decent enough spot early but fell back as the race progressed and gave me the look of a horse simply outclassed on the afternoon both in the form and during the race.
Teraset from Winning Link Stables was the right price on the board to pose a decent money play, but was unable to improve enough to play ball here and like the horse who finished right in front of her, was probably just simply outclassed.
Tiptop Shape from Williams9 got some support at the windows and did not go off as the longest price here. Unfortunately she got a rude awakening here and found the context of this race much too difficult to deal with after just breaking her maiden when last seen at Finger Lakes.
