Spicy Junction Saves Best for Last in Dancing Renee

Six Furlongs on the Dirt
June 13, 2020

It had been a while since Spicy Junction had last run six furlongs, going just a little bit longer in all of her races for this calendar year. When she did run this distance, she looked plenty good in doing so. Seeing her pick up a win here today should not have been a surprise as ten of her last eleven races have seen her finish first or third. We placed her third in the preview. The winning trainer of this filly by the late Conjunction Junction is Arindel, and it is his first win in the stake. That also true for jockey M Franco. Congratulations to them! The race was won in a time of 1:09.43, the second quickest in the stake’s history. Let’s take a look at it!

(1/4 Mile- :22.92)- Immortal Steel, the winner of this race last year, jumps out to the lead for Wolf Ridge Stables right out of the starting gate and will open up an advantage of a length and a half over the second place Frenched Sorrow, out of Ace Racing Stable. They are essentially all in a line at this point as Z Laffy One, is right behind her stablemate. Next is the TwinTowersRacing trained Gold Futures, and the trailer early on in the race is our eventual winner. Arindel’s Spicy Junction is six lengths from the lead after the opening quarter.

(½ Mile- :45.67, Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Immortal Steel, who essentially went wire to wire in this race last year, tries to do that again as she continues to be on the lead in an uncontested manner. Frenched Sorrow continues to stalk her, but makes no move on her. Behind her, things start to get a little interesting, and would could see M Franco take a peak at an outside run with Spicy Junction midway through the turn before opting to wait just a little bit longer to make that move. As Gold Futures began to make her own move on Z Laffy One, who was lacking response, M Franco wisely decided that he would not wait any longer and moved Spicy Junction into a position to begin a three wide move. His filly responded, and was ready to pounce on the entire field by the time they reached the top of the stretch.

(Finish- 1:09.43)- The pacesetter, Immortal Steel was not prepared for what was about to come at her. At first, it looked like Frenched Sorrow would be a main threat on the inside, but eventually the explosive kick displayed by Spicy Junction would show itself. Running in the money lane, there was simply no one better, and she ends up winning by nearly a length. The rest of the field is in a four way photo for place, and that photo results in Frenched Sorrow completing the exacta, ahead of Gold Futures, Z Laffy One, and Immortal Steel.

About The Winner- Spicy Junction, trained by Arindel, and ridden to victory by M Franco, is a four year old filly by the late Conjunction Junction, and is out of Spicy Advice. She was bred in New York by Nakamura Stables, and acquired by Arindel, via Night Rider Stables, in a $37.5000 claimer in May 2019. The win is her seventh in 20 starts but her first stake victory! Her career earnings are now $273.640.
