The Best Milers Gather for BC Mile

The best milers in the virtual world will gather at the starting gate at CD for the 2018 running of the Grade One BC Mile at 1 mile on the turf for a purse of $2,000.000. The race history is dotted with legends like Alpha Ultimo and MasterBomBay. Jagged Account won the race twice in the early years. Last year the race was won by three-year-old Ingrained from Mb Stables, who has three starters in this year’s event just as he had in last year run.

Banshee Star 97 8-1

Joseph Racing’s Grade I Woodford Turf Classic winner, Banshee Star tuned up for the BC Mile with a second in the Grade III LRL Turf Cup at the same distance and surface as this race.

Lucky Phooey 96 20-1

Estero Farms’ Lucky Phooey has yet to win a graded stakes race, but has been consistently knocking on the door. The three-year-old was second in the DMR Derby two races back, but will have to dig deep to be a factor here.

The Hand Youre Dealt 95 6-1

The first of his traditional starters, Mb Stables’ The Hand Youre Dealt is the highest ranked of the group coming off back-to-back wins, including the Grade I Fourstardave Handicap. A continuation of this recent form should have him close at the wire.

T N T Dynamite 95 20-1

Saratoga Stud’s T N T Dynamite was closing well in the Grade III LRL Turf Cup but came up short. The race before he tried running on the lead and held on gamely for a head defeat in third. The race before was another closer for third. All three races were Grade III. He comes here looking for his first graded win.

Midwestern Slang 96 12-1

Gdp Inc’s Midwestern Slang has been trying long routes with little success. Three back, however, he won the Grade II Read Stakes at DMR with a 100 SRF, so he should appreciate the reduction of distance in here.

Nitemare 94 5-1

D J C Racing Stables’ sophomore Nitemare won the Grade II DMR Derby after making a lot of noise in graded stakes races all year, before disappointing in the Grade II Hill prince last out. If he can throw off that last race, he figures to be close at the wire.

Controlled Power 101 *3-1

Spankys Barn’s Controlled Power has the most points of the horses entered to this race His last race was a close third in the 1 ½ mile Northern Dancer BC Turf. Most significantly, the last time this one saw a mile was when he won back-to-back the Grade I Kilroe Mile and the Grade I Makers Mark Mile. He looks every bit like a return to one mile will be victorious.

Devil Six 96 20-1

D J C Racing Stables’ Devil Six has thrown a couple of clunkers on his way here, so seems ill-fated for this race. Three races back, he ran third in the Grade I Fourstardave Handicap. He needs to revert to that form if he’s to have a chance here.

Z One Chance 99 4-1

John Henry’s Z One Chance was an impressive second, beaten but a nose in the Grade I WO Mile after winning the Grade I Crosby Stakes at DMR. Prior to that, he won the Grade I Shoemaker Mile, He couldn’t be coming into this race in much better form.

Decibel 98 5-1

Threshold’s Decibel disappointed in the WO Mile last out after running second in the Grade I AP Million. Since ear’s BC Turf, he has appeared in six straight Grade I races, winning the GP Turf Handicap. If he can shake off the WO Mile loss, he can be a threat here.

Thats Fazzt 94 15-1

Since being purchased for $8.500 and gelded, Estero Farms’ Thats Fazzt has been no farther back than second, winning the Grade II King Edward BC Stakes. The lightly-raced sophomore seems to have a future, and he hopes it starts with a victory here.

Name Drop 95 12-1

After winning three stakes races, Mb Stables’ Name Drop stretched out to longer routes that didn’t work out all that well. Two of the stakes were Grade II races at distances complimentary to this race. If he can remember back to those races, he can be a factor here.

Nowhere Man 99 20-1

WO Mile winner, Mb Stables’ Nowhere Man came up short in the Grade I Shadwell Turf Mile prepping for this. Perhaps the of track contributed to the poor showing. If the track is firm for this race, he could be involved.

Siberian Prince 90 10-1

After winning the Grade II Wise Dan and running second in the Grade II Read Stakes, Sir Daniel Martin’s sophomore Siberian Prince stepped up in grade and distance and ran out in two Grade I 1 ½ mile races. We can throw those out, but he will still need to improve to Grade I level.
