The Sugar Swirl Looks Sweet

We have nine female speedsters ready to go six furlongs on the main track as we look at the field for the 2019 Sugar Swirl (GIII) here in Hallendale, FL.  All of the handicappers here see it the say way from a winner’s perspective… we can’t get past Gobekli Tepe.  When last see at SA on BC Day, she just missed after doing all of the heavy lifting, leading
til deep stretch and still getting the show money, beaten a length.  All five of her wins this year have been stakes and it’s just hard to see any of these pulling the upset.  I’m looking at Dragon Wagon in my exacta as the gray has been in good form of late and should continue to improve moving over to the new barn.  It would be an upset in my eye for her to win, but she does look the best of the rest.  I would throw a blanket over the others but put Ginger Nightshade in the third spot off of her current form.
Here’s the Field…

1
 Sweet Catomine  John Henry  Leparoux J R 120 8/1

Has struggled since changing hands via private purchase back in July.  All of those have been vs. graded foes, but that’s exactly what’s she’s seeing here, so it ain’t going to get any easier.  If she can get back to her spring form she could be part of this but a repeat of the recent stuff and it’s another long afternoon.

2
Dragon Wagon  Maxmillion Farm  Maragh Ro 120 4/1

Snagged from the Sept. Auction for just $12.010 and ran two bang-up races showing an Alw win and a third in the Raven Run (GII) at KEE.  She has changed hands yet again and she seem spotted for a big effort.  I’d certainly use her in the trifecta.

3
 Glistening  Smokey Stover  Lopez P 120 7/1

Broke her 2019 win streak last out after six consecutive wins.   Closed well in the TC of America (GII) at KEE but was ninth facing graded foes that day.  Can she get back to her winning ways here?  Her works say watch out.

4
Hollywood Short  Estero Farms  Juarez N 120 8/1

This one is still looking for her first win of ’19 although she has been close a number of times this season.  On the board in half of her eight starts this year and could certainly be in the mix here.  She will need her best, but she usually brings it.

5
Crush Szyra  High Voltage  Jaramillo E 120 8/1

Purchased three back by private sale and shows a pair of wins and a nice second where she missed by a head.  This is her first swing at stakes company but she’s certainly earned the chance to go after them.  She could be a price, as well.

6
 Gobekli Tepe  Threshold  Rendon J 120 4/5

Classy filly just missed in the BC F&M Sprint (GI) at SA, missing the big payday by two lengths.  She has five wins from eight starts this year, hasn’t been off of the board, has faced the best sprinters in the land, runs big on dirt/turf/parking lot and… ok, you get the
picture.  She should be odd-on here today.

7
Immortal Steel  Wolf Ridge Stables  Zayas E J 123 6/1

Solid season showing three wins from her nine starts and was on the board in three other races.  Has done the majority of her damage vs. NY-bred types, so this is a step up for her.  Still, she loves it fast and could be in the thick of it.

8
Ginger Nightshade  The Sidley Stud  Landeros C 120 5/1

Only off the board in one of her eight seasonal starts and that was a fourth… has four wins to boot and although she’s been facing softer, her times certainly say she can be a big factor today.  Comes into this with back-to-back wins.  She’s tough right now.

9
Unprecedented  South Beach Racing  Corrales G 120 12/1

Her single ’19 win came way back in Jan when breaking maiden but she has been close in a number of graded races.  A length here, a half-length there and she could have a bunch of wins.  But can she find that little extra today?
