Thrilling Dead Heat in NM Breeders Derby

NM Breeders Derby ($120.000 Purse)
SUN- For Three Year Olds Foaled In NM
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
March 22, 2020

After running a mile and sixteenth here at the NM Breeders Derby, there would be no separating two of our competitors at the wire. Both Raleigh In Doubt and Inoubliable would convincingly put away their rivals in the stretch and had a thrilling battle between them. There would be no loser in that battle, as the two horses are credited with a dead heat. Ekli Stable (Raleigh In Doubt) and T Boy Racing (Inoubliable) will share this win, the first for each in the stake. The riders, T Gaffalione and R Chirinos also win for the first time. Congratulations! The time of the victory was 1:41.69, and that is a new record for the stake. I’m sad to report that the last place horse, Desecrator was virtually euthanized after the race. Let’s take a look!

(1/4 Mile- :23.63)- In a quick opening fraction, the leader is Useless Debate, as the Gdp Inc entry pushes forward from his outside post. Ideal Lion, from Spankys Barn, seems like he might run with him early, but backs off just a little bit and concedes that second position to T Boy Racing’s Inoubliable, one of our co-winners, around the turn. That one did not initially break well but became assertive in the turn. Raleigh In Doubt, Ekli Stable’s co-winner ran fourth, two lengths back, and right there with them was Sport Mad, from Night Rider Stables. Three lengths in total separates this group, then we have a bit of a gap to the next group, which is led by Red Star Murphy (Greeko Holdem) on the rail. Stablemate Fonzo is to his outside, and running three wide it’s Start The Engine (Axeman). Desecrator trailed for Jive Inc.

(½ Mile- :47.30)- At the front, Useless Debate leads the field down the backstretch without much pressure on him. Inoubliable never continued his advance to the point of challenging for the lead, and settled in about a length back, running in the outside line. Raleigh In Doubt started to creep forward just a little bit midway through the backstretch, so he was looming as one to watch as the race approached the turn. Ideal Lion and Sport Mad continued to run just a couple lengths off the lead, but each content to ride out this portion of the race. Red Star Murphy, Fonzo, and Start The Engine were three wide behind him while Desecrator lagged behind at the back.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- The looming battle between Inoubliable and Raleigh In Doubt begins setting up soon in the turn. It would behind by Inoubliable maintaining his outside line and making the pass of Useless Debate about midway through the turn. Midway though, Raleigh In Doubt continued to push forward, and moved to the outside of Useless Debate, also completing the pass. They reached the exit of the turn running side by side, and matching strides reaching the stretch. Useless Debate fell into third, and with these two running so well, it would take a truly memorable performance by someone further back to also become a challenger here.

(Finish- 1:41.69)- About midway through the stretch run, it looked like Raleigh In Doubt was going to be just a little bit better. He took a lead about a neck for a brief period of time, but Inoubliable was not going to be denied so quickly and came right back on him to draw even again with a half furlong to go. Everyone else was an afterthought at this point. Once Inoubliable was back even, it was Raleigh In Doubt’s turn to respond and not let this race slip away. They matched strides to the wire, and hit the line together. After looking at the photo, there was no clear winner, and a dead heat was declared between the two of them. The best of the rest trifecta completion goes to Sport Mad, who topped Fonzo, Red Star Murphy, Useless Debate, Start The Engine, Ideal Lion and Desecrator.
