Totally Baroque Proves Class is More than Trip in Princess Rooney Handicap

Princess Rooney Handicap – Grade II [BC]
6 Furlongs Dirt Stake Purse $300.000 Filly & Mare 3 Year Olds And Up.

1st Totally Baroque Aer Stables Court J K

I had a sneaking suspicion that the old stayer to sprint hack was going to work for this one as a perfect storm brewed up with the ace draw and the fast work. This classy filly that won the Gazelle as a three year old and was runner up in the KYO had never won a sprint and her only two other starts at this sort of trip saw her beaten in maidens. That however doesn’t mean much at HRP its all about the class gene, the draw and the works and this one got the trifecta in this race.
It is great to see AER back in the winners circle as they have had a real up and down year with some wonderful victories and some rotten luck and that is perfectly borne out in this ones efforts this year.

So is she a sprinter or is she a router……fast enough to keep up with a 22 and 2 first quarter and strong enough to be third in the BC Distaff last year, it seems these good horses can do anything at HRP. Maybe a grade one on the turf next !!

2nd Class Status Fractious Velazquez J R

Being more of a sprinter type it was the draw that pulled her to the back today and that was almost a good decision as they really stepped it out early on. In the end though with a bunched pack it is always hard for the closers and she couldn’t get round everything in time. Beaten under a length at the end this was a very good run from the top weight and i am sure there are more good wins in her.

3rd Dream Whisperer Mb Stables Hernandez R M

Tried for the double hack of turf to dirt and route to sprint but just wasn’t good enough in the end. She looked very dangerous entering the stretch but was just a shade one paced in the end finishing third. A good effort.

4th Grand Cyclone Maxmillion Farm Cedillo A

Two handicaps 4 furlongs apart with the same result, fourth beaten a length. Took the wide gate speed push and went to the front and after setting a strong pace justifiably struggled in the last furlong.
